Poverty in the world

I think that it is very sad how poor some countries of the world are. Most of the poorest countries are in Africa. I saw a program about a man traveling around the world keeping as near to the Tropic of Capricorn as possible. He went to the border of Zimbabwe and South Africa. Hungry people were coming over to get food in South Africa! Villagers in Botswana were being pushed out of their village by the government. They lived in very basic conditions. I think the mining for valuable gem stones without proper equipment is extremely dangerous and men do this every day but for very little money. Many people in Africa don't have a safe supply of water. Do you know much about poverty in the world? How can the poor be helped? Thanks

Personally I want to help hands on. I'm doing a degree in International Development starting in September this year, which I plan to use working for an NGO in developing nations - Africa, Asia and South America. I'm not picky :) I love travelling, and want to incorporate this into my future career, and I also want to help people. I hope that I will actually manage to make some kind of difference in that career. It;s horrible to see that kind of poverty isn't it. And especially when you really don't know which way is best to go about helping them. I think we're best leaving it to the professional - because I think that it's so very important making sure that the money gets used in the most efficient ways possible and it can be harder than it seems to allocate and organise it well. Some of this has to do with corrupt governments which make the lives of their people even harder - with of course an extreme example at the moment being Zimbabwe.

That is everywhere in the world. Africa is not the only place that is in proverty. One thing that i can say that Africa has not had is any natural disasters. Or at least i think that they have not; compared to other countries. Poverty is everywhere even in your back your. It's just not shown on tv.

The people in the worst poverty are victims of huge corporations and/or wars. Corrupt governments abuse their power by oppressing the citizens. There are parts of the world that have been destroyed by the waste from oil drilling or mining practices that leave the earth barren and filled with toxic waste. We must be conscious of where our products come from, what kind of working conditions produced them, how the laborers were treated. How we gave China preferred trading status when their civil rights and working conditions record is so bad is beyond me. Yet it is a real challenge to buy products that are NOT made in China. The World Trade Organization has a terrible record of ignoring working conditions and environmental damage of the corporations they deal with. The poverty in Africa and S. America and many other countries is a result of countries like the U.S. who insist on buying more and more inexpensive products made at the expense of the most vulnerable in these countries. The poor can be helped by those who are not poor demanding that trade occurs only with companies who pay a living wage and do not destroy the environment.

Hello Maximax8, I do agree that there are WAY to many poor people on this planet. And the reason I say planet is because it doesnt matter which country you are from there are going to be poor people. Look at my lovely country the grand old USA. We have tons of poor people that the government doesnt want you to know about. They want the world to think that we are one of the RICHEST countries in the world. Well the country might be rich but there are ALOT of poor people here. Look at New Orleans for example there are hundreds of people living in tents and boxes under an over pass because the government made a promise to help them and havent. They lost everything due to Katrina. There are tons of homeless people in every city of this country. We are making the Rich richer and the poor poorer. This needs to stop every where. But that will never happen because of all the GREEDY people in this world. I want to thank you for bring this subject up though because you are right there are alot of poor people but I am not sure how we can help. I do think though that you should try your local homeless shelter and ask them what you can do to help. That each of us in our own countries needs to help those around us. I am not saying that we shouldn't help other countries also. I am just saying that we focus alot on other countries and not the one we live in.

Thanks for your excellent response. Before I went to the USA I thought it was a rich country. I went to Los Angeles and was surprised to see poor people living in cardboard boxes. It was awful for the local people of New Orleans after Katrina hit it. It must be awful to lose everything in such a terrible event and get so very little help from the government. I know that Americans have to pay for medical treatment. How do the very poor manage to do this? My homeland spent so much money on the war in Iraq but offers much less help to poor people in the world.

Jesus says that we will always have the poor with us (Matt. 26:11a) but to reduce their number and alleviate their plight is possible with prayer as the first step for with God all things are possible.

I believed that the worst form of violence is poverty. It's sad to know that there are people who are homeless and hungry while there are powerful people whose living in a castle and never get the chance to know what the word hungry really means. If only all the people in Earth will have a kind heart to help out in their own way I guess the number of poor and helpless will go down. Whenever I see beggars on the streets it really breaks my heart so I promised myself I would do my thing to help in community service. I may not help all of them but I want to share what I have to some of them. Not just financially because I dont have much of that but try to educate them on how to help themselves get out of poverty.

poverty is a world wide problem. to fight for poverty is to remove the causes. unfortunately, only few things we could do but still not enough to erase poverty. i've seen a lot of videos (like the music video of carrie underwood in her song "ill stand by you" where it shows that Africans suffer so much poverty and diseases. diseases that are hard to cure, diseases that has no cure. i couldn't help but cry. seeing those people who are hungry, crying for pain, shouting for justice kills me. i just could not understand how many people to be very judgmental. they tend to laugh whenever they see poor people roaming everywhere instead of thinking even simple things to help them ease their burdens. friends, we don't need to give them something we couldn't give. just be friendly to them, will surely help a lot.

Yes, it is really pathetic to read about the poverty in many countries. I have not been to any African countries. But, I have been reading about the people in poverty. The best I could do, and have been doing is to donate to NGO's who are putting all their effort to help the people. And, I encourage my friends too to make donations. Thank you Maxi.

Hi, Off course it is very pity even most of developed countries know that. Still I dreams to care them if I could have a trust or charitable organizations that has sufficient money and people to manage. Also I hope if every millionaires come forward the whole poverty in the world can be eliminated within few time. At least a few can help a big number. May they might be doing their part as we might be unaware of that. Hope and wish the poverty to be eliminated soon.

I think problem of poverty is very hard to solve. While we see a lot of rich people all over the world, millionaires, billionaires, there are also people who somestimes dont even eat in a day because of poverty. I am just thinking if those rich people will unite and each of them will spare or share about 1 million each every month to the poor, i think little by little poverty will be diminished or at least many people will be given food.

i live in south africa. please be aware that most africans try to make people feel sorry for them, so in the media you would hear the most heartbreaking stories glorified. the biggest problem with poverty is governments. the masses voted them in power and now they want to blame everything but the government. example. they pay people to have children but most public schools .have no books, teachers or tables and chairs. theres just not enough money left in the treasury. its a huge problem. if something here isnt broken, they fix it. if something is broken, blame apartheid. when they took over, the poor population more than tripled.

Poverty is not the most important problem in our planet, maybe is only the result of many reasons, such as climate change, war, religion conflict...We do not love each other,we all think ourself is the center of the world,we don't want to understand others,we don't believe others. We all think others are our competitor,so we must compete with others, that is absolutely wrong! Understanding, comprehension, friendship and peace are the most important things we should do!!!
