i live in montana, so no i am not in the south. for starters the word was originally used to refer to people in the new england states. i am not a new englander. more importantly the reason a southerner would take such offence to it as you point out, is because they use that word to belittle northerners. i have an uncle who has lived the past 12years of his life in louisana. he has come to find out that any time a southerner calls you a yank or yankee, they sure as heck don't mean friend!

yeah i know it doesn't mean just new englanders any more i was just saying. it offends me because i don't about where you are but where i am us fellow northerners do not go around calling each other yank or yankee. as far i know it is only the southerners who call us that. when they do they are not merely calling us northerners. they mean it in a derogatory or belittling way. if that does not offend you so be it but it does offend me. i believe this posts asked if we were offended by the word and i am. i didn't see anything in the post that said we had to defend why we were offended by it so why the 3rd degree over it?

No, of course I don't find it offensive. My Londoner calls me a yank all the time. And in return, I call him stuff like Brit, limey, pommy... I think that's pretty much it. Does it offend you when someone calls you a limey?

Not at all. I was born in Michigan so technically I'm a Yankee. It's just a word so it's not a big deal. I've never understood why it is so wrong for non-black ppl to use the "N" word but black ppl call each other that all the time. Seems to be somewhat of a double standard. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Not at all comparable! It would not offend me. I might think they assumed I was from one of the Northern states.
