Future car fuels

I just saw yesterday early morning the third episode in the 4-part FutureCar series on Discovery Channel. Wow. I'm really excited about the developments in this field in the automotive industry (and in power generation in general). Ethanol, biodiesel, solar, water, hydrogen, pure electricity, even air! All of you should see that. Although I've read on autobloggreen.com that there were a lot of inaccuracies in the show, it's still thought-provoking and should start discussion and more action and support towards environment-friendly -- and cheaper -- technologies. Here in the Philippines, I'm not sure how "good" we will be in adopting those technologies. At the moment, I reckon even the term "hybrid car" is alien to car enthusiasts here. And I'm not a car enthusiast, just a techie. (Though if I'm having a car, I'd prefer one that doesn't run on fossil fuel. At the moment I'm eyeing the hybrid Toyota Prius =') It's a great leap towards a clean environment. Maybe even a step towards a future where money doesn't hold the value it does now. I mean, air and solar power is free. When we don't pay for our car fuels anymore, what else would we not be paying for in the future?

I own a Prius and it is the best car that I've ever owned. It does not deliver as many miles per gallon as the adverts would have you believe; but it is still pretty respectable. And I love the fact that when I stop at traffic lights, the engine cuts out only restarting when I accelerate again. However, the Hybrid engine can only be an interim step whilst other, cleaner technologies are developed. I suspect that none of us will be able to afford petrol (gas) in the next 20 years, so the quicker some alternatives come, the better for us all. Mind you I don't think that energy will ever be completely free. It will still take money to exploit new technologies and to get the power to us.

Very cOol! ='D The very first responder to my very first started discussion actually owns the car that I'm planning to get =') And that was a very good observation. I haven't considered thinking about that before. But, you're right, petrol would be so darn expensive by then (the price trend going as it's been since I was born). And then considering that fossil fuels are getting more and more scarce. I just watched a CNN report about the scarcity of fossil fuels. The reporter said that our fossil fuel supply would run out in 50 years (and that geologists are now exploring the cold, icy regions for new sources).

Many thanks for the Best Response. I am sorry that you didn't get a few more responses because the supply of fuel and energy is very important issue that effects us all wherever we live.

No problem p1kef1sh ;') I've also seen you generally have excellent posts around here =') Yeah, I'm sad too that this topic didn't get the attention I'd hoped. It's somewhat okay for me that I didn't get that many responses here, but I really hope that the seemingly dull reception of this discussion doesn't reflect the overall regard of people on the issue fuel and energy :', More POWER to you! ='D heheheh

the first toyota prius came out in 1997.. geneating electricity also requires burning coal if the industry won't turn to solar energy and mechanical energy from wind and water.. now this new car being developed by honda, i think, i'll check later when i find the time magaine issue where i read it from.. they use hydrogen instead.. the this is great because hydrogen can be extracted from water and that we have in abundance, but wait, there's more.. surprise, surprise, the waste product of hydrogen when used as fuel is oxygen.. because hydrogen when processed in this machine mix with oxygen in the air turning it to h2o which is water (of course you new that, bright pinoy).. anyway, great huh? ofcourse production is still expensive because it's a new technology so we won't see that in the market just yet.. then again i heard that oil industries bought the technolog as well so we won't be seeing one till oil is completely depleted..

haha.. i graduated hs in 2003, i don't know if there was any monumental discovery back then.. anyway, it's surprising how many misspelled words i have on my posts.. makes me wonder if it was a lapse when typing with the keyboard or a glitch on my brain.. lol.. anyway, yeah, i'm glad the fight to stop global warming is getting trendy.. but not trendy enough.. like you said, we may be getting too late.. like right now, i'm just typing here and i think my back perspiring.. sigh... i wonder what else we can do..

Coolness. I graduated high school in '97 har har :'p Did you really have to say I was bright? Darn, thanks :'p maybe you meant to say "bright as solar energy"? ='p And I appreciate you explaining things for people; it's a good thing. I learn, other people learn =') And people should really think about and DO this "taking care of the environment thing"! Thank God it's getting trendy! About time! (Actually, it's already late... but not too late, I hope.)
