I know Melaleuca oil is good for ear mites. Just a very small drop or two, as its very strong. I used it on dogs in the past and it worked like a charm.

Melaleuca is the brand and actually the only way you can get it is by being a distributor (I was a few years ago). Its basically tea tree oil, but supposedly a better, more pure quality that they get from a special tree in Australia. You could probably still get some in a health food store.

Don't try the "natural" methods. These will just prolong your cat's suffering and eventually you'll need to get real medicine anyway. If you don't want to go to the vet, check with your feed store and see what antiparasitics they carry. But stay away from the Hartz products. If possible, get some Ivermectin because that is what the vet will likely use anyway. But be extremely careful with dosing and make sure you know what you're doing. It's easy to dose them, but make sure you know how to read the syringe and all of that so that you don't overdose.

thanks for the tips,i read on yahoo answers that this medicine called "frontline" is actually harmful for a cat coz it is meant to kill a different kind of bug and shouldnt be used on a cat's ears.some suggested neosporin, advantage, etc..

I heard an oil substance will kill them because the ear mites sufficate. I'm not sure if it's a certain kind or brand but it does make some kind of sense in how it would work because it's not water and it's thick so how could ANYTHING breathe in that kind of substance? LOL

oh yeah i remember i read something at yahoo answers before that that was the method that she was using to her cat,and it makes it easier to get rid of the black stuff inside their ears, the black stuff is actually the feces of those mites..my cats ears dont have a lot of mite droppings in it,but he always scratches his ear.and yeah i agree that it does make sense, mites can possibly be suffocated in that kinda substance LOL

I don't know that this is true but I have heard that if you put cedar trees(like limbs and things off of cedar trees)around anything with mites that all of the mites will be attracted to teh cedar and go to it and after they eat the cedar it will kill the mites..thats just what i have heard from a few people but I dont know that it is true..but doesnt hurt to try!

The phenols from cedar can help to kill mites. Prolonged exposure will also harm your cat. This method isn't likely to cure the mites, so it can hurt to try because the cat will be suffering for longer while the owner waits for these natural methods to work.
