My son is going to have extensive dental work done in May and when he went to the oral surgeon he was given Penicillan DK. I never heard of it so I googled it and every site was so scientifically speaking that I could't understand a word of it. He's been taking it for 2 days and now he's developed an earache and sore throat. I think that's odd since he's taking Penicillan don't you? I would think it would kill any germs that would give those to him wouldn't you? Have you ever heard of it? Do you know anything about it? Should he have a sore throat and ear ache which he never gets?

I have never heard of penicillan with a DK attached to it..I do know that penicillan is the usual medication for dentist work, but never heard of the DK....It sounds as though your son may be allergic to it.,maybe he should call the dentist and get a different percription...

From what I read Penicillan DK has an agent in it specifically for people who might be allergic to Penicillan. But I'm learning a lot about it in this discussion.

It means that he has penicillin resistant bacteria and needs to talk to his doctor again. Work done in May? Penicillin DK is Procaine benzylpenicillin, or speaking mormal language Penicillin with local anesthetic agent procaine.

hmmm....the anesthetic agent would make sense since he's in a lot of pain. I can't wait to tell him about that. Thanks for the information.

Penicillan was the first anti-botic ever invented and was known as a medical breakthrough around 50 years ago or even longer than that. Its not that way as much as it use to be because of the viruses getting stronger over time to overcome anti-botic. With the bad staff infections doctors are more hesitant to prescribe anti-botics these days because of more powerful viruses developing over time.
