What unique varieties of fruits or vegetables do you grow, or plan on growing - that the average person may not have every tried or even heard of? I am pretty boring in this aspect - i think the most unique thing I have grown has been yellow pear tomatoes... they are delicious by the way, low in acid rather sweet - probably not so uncommon anymore.

I've found some really interesting vegetable seed varieties to grow this year. They include: purple tomatoes green tiger stripe tomatoes yellow pear shaped tomatoes purple carrots with orange centers little purple-blue hot peppers some sort of broccoli-cauliflower hybrid that looks like ufos:) Most of these varieties taste pretty much the same as more common veggies, but they certainly add different colours and shapes to the vegetable garden! I love the purple peppers, it's a gorgeous bushy green plant with dozens of little inch-big peppers that turn bright purple as they ripen. Other than that, I'm planning on trying to grow some various types of squash, potatoes, and lettuce.

Purple sounds like it is the *hot* color for the year! you did come up with some interesting varieties. I saw seeds for striped tomatoes last year - wouldn't that be lovely in a salad? made me think of that gum we used to get as kids - Yikes, STripes, fruit stripes gum!

Yeah, they're either coming out with more colourful varieties, or maybe I'm just drawn to purple... it adds such a unique look to the vegetable garden!

Purple tomatoes definitely taste different than the traditional Beefsteak. One of my favorites is the 'Orange Jubilee'. Cherokee purple is a similar in size and shape to Roma tomatoes that you might want to try. People seemed to like them at the farmer's market.

I don't think I grow anything normal. LOL I grow a lot of passion fruits. I grew the Passiflora 'Purple Haze' that is being used as my avatar. Sicana odirifera or Cassabana is something unique. It used to be in the cucumber family. The ripe flesh is eaten raw or used in jams and preserves. The unripe fruit is used is cooked and used like a vegetable. The fruit will last for several months if you keep it dry and out of the sun.
