Grated cheese is great! (So are bagged salads.)

Do you use convenience or prepackaged foods when you cook, such as pre-grated cheese and bagged salads? Or do you think they're too expensive? Anymore I find that I'm using - and paying for - cheese that's already shredded rather than shredding it myself, and I can't remember the last time I bought lettuce that wasn't already cleaned, cut up, and in a salad in a plastic bag. I know they cost more, but they save a lot of time - and who has that anymore? On the plus side, I do try to buy these items when they're on sale and we do eat more salads than ever before since they're so easy to pour into a bowl and add dressing. What do you think? Is it worth it to buy the pre-prepared foods or is it better to grate, shred, and chop your own?

I'm not big on shredded cheese, but I am big on salads. I always buy the pre-bagged salads. I'll eat a bag a day if not more all by myself. I also like the fact that most come with carrots and cabbage already in them. As far as price, I go to a discount food store and they're 2 for $3.00. You can't beat that!! At my regular grocery store they're 2 for $6.00 and that's if they're on sale. So, I try to make it to my discount store once or twice a week. Pre-bagged salad is worth it to me.

Wow, that discount price makes them really worth it. Wish I had a store like that close to me. I'd have to drive quite a ways to get to a discount grocery store, so that would take all of the savings. I'm glad you pointed it out, though, because next time I'm in that area, I'll remember to stock up on salads. Thanks for the response!

Depends on which is cheaper when I go to buy. A head of lettuce was 50 cents this week, while the bagged was a dollar something. I dont' eat it as quickly so the head stays fresher longer than the ready-cut. Lately chunk cheese has been rather high, but this one brand of shredded has been about half the price for more lbs. for the last 2 months so I get that. It also is healthy per the ingredient label more so than the chunk, so it works out very well for the time being! I used to get the chunk and grate it and then freeze it - (you cn freeze grated, just not sliced or chunk)I'd buy the 3 lb chunk and grate it in the food processor and bag it in quart size ziploc bags and use as needed. Worked really well.

My goodness, your produce prices are certainly better than ours are here. I don't even want to admit what I pay for a bag of salad, but a lot more than you do. And 50 cents for lettuce is unheard of, although I have to admit that I barely look at the prices anymore so I don't put myself in the position of having to make a decision based on cost. My food budget certainly isn't huge, but I continue to justify the price of the packaged salads. As for the cheese, I've never grated and frozen my own. That sounds like the way to go, especially if you have a food processor (I actually don't). I think all dairy prices have gone up lately, cheese included, so I've actually cut back just a little bit on using cheese and rarely buy when it isn't on sale. I love sales (and I love cheese)! Thanks for your input!

Usually they are close to the same - 10 bags for $10 or 50 cents a head or 10/$10. I don't like the carrots in the bags - tastes really weird! and it tends to wilt faster in the bags than the head. Cheese - it is cheaper - shredded 2 lbs for $4.99 and the chuncks were 2 lbs for $7. No deal there. Same stuff according to the ingredient labels. Know what is more expensive than thinkable? Cold cereals! Good golly miss molly those suckers are like $4 for a small box and if you got kids - one box per breakfast meal and looking at ingredients - they don't have much difference that just regular corn flakes or something like that!

I never buy cereal unless it's on sale. Got a big box of Post Honeycomb for a dollar the other day. Makes a great snack - eat it out of a plastic cup or bowl at the computer (no milk). I love cereal but, you're right, it's very expensive.

I do both, it depends on how my money is that week. The bag salad is usually not that bad in price. Same as the cheese. I like the convience of having it all prepared for you.

Thats a good idea, but doesn't the lettuce turn brown on the edges. I have heard that if you cut it up like that it will turn brown. I have also heard that if you use a plastic knife it doesn't turn brown.

When I use the head of lettuce, I'll wash and cut it all up and put it in a large tupperware container and then take out as I need it.

I like the convenience, too. We wouldn't eat salad nearly as much if I had to put it all together myself. Thanks!

I do buy the bagged salads when they are on sale - the other week they were 69cents a pound bag - I bought 4 and we ate them all.... but, I do not find them as flavorful.. I like romaine lettuce the best and also spinach - often times I will add these to the bagged salad to enhance it some.

That does sound good, I wish I had the makings for a salad.

I just have to find a cheaper place to shop! I like romaine best, too, and love to put together a nice spinach salad without the fuss and muss of cleaning spinach. Add a boiled egg and some bacon and a red onion to that spinach and I could eat that all day long. Gosh, I'm getting hungry. :-)

Hi there, My52cents...... Well, as for me, I don't like the smell that bagged lettuce has, it's soooooo gross. Easier, yes, but I can't get past the smell, Peeeeee-U! :o) The grated cheese, now I can handle that, but it is more expensive, that's for sure. I think that I still enjoy being in the kitchen w/my hubby, cutting the stuff up ourselves. Guess it's just a personal thang!!! :o)

Well, you know what? If your hubby works with you in the kitchen like that, then you SHOULD continue to cut the stuff up yourselves! I think that is super sweet! I love it when my husband works with me in the kitchen, although that doesn't happen very often. I might just have to hand him some utensils and get him started. Sounds like the way to get things done and have a cozy-good time, too! Thanks for adding to the discussion.

I will buy Romaine lettuce that is not in a bag sometimes, but I find that when I do that it goes to waste more than when I buy the bagged salad. I like to eat lettuce on sandwiches and stuff but I am not a big salad eating person. I love the Asian salad from McDonalds though so I re-create that at home for much less expensive. I buy already grated cheese too. I do own a cheese grater but I normally only use it for Mexican cheese because it comes in a big block. I usually buy frozen bagged onion because we don't use a whole lot of it. Recently someone gave us two big onions though. I chopped them up and froze them myself so they didn't go to waste. Phew! I was really crying! I had never chopped a whole lot of onion before and they weren't kidding about how bad your eyes water when you do it!

Chopping onions certainly takes time, so the frozen is nice, but doing that yourself is a great idea. I've done that before for onions and for bell peppers. Buy them on sale then chop or slice and freeze for cooking. And beware the tears! Thanks for your input!

I don't ever buy either. I'm not even sure they're always more expensive, but I buy block cheese anyway, and buying grated cheese is just another purchase/package/storage to deal with. It's easier to grate what I need when I need it. Prepackaged salads always taste off to me, and I'd rather make my own mix of vegetables.

You are very fortunate to be able to buy preshredded and prepackaged produce. Unfortunately a lot of people who cannot afford it also do so. Somehow they think this is the only way to cook. Honestly I never buy items like that. I am afraid there are preservatives in it or it is contaminated and the bacteria inside the bags can multiply and make me sick. I also don't know if the salad is properly washed or not and if any foreign matter is picked out. I shred my cheese and love the fresh smell that is emitted. For salad I by whole lettuces that are really fresh and sometimes the loose mesclun mixture that I can look at before I scoop it into the bag. I also like to add different things to salads, like chopped up peppers or carrots, English cucumbers, plum tomatoes or walnut pieces and different dressings for different salads. One of my hobbies is to watch cooking shows and of course the chefs always start with fresh ingredients. Anyway that is just me, to each their own.

I do remember a lot of recalls a year or two ago of packaged salad mixes. Hopefully that means that they are watched carefully and really are washed properly. I don't think there are preservatives, but chances are they're treated in some way to make them last until you open the bag, so they'll travel well. Of course the very best salad is one that is grown in your own garden and I'd never choose bagged salad over that. I need a garden! Thanks for your thoughtful response!

I wonder if your husband might like one of the specialty salads that they have out now. I had some sort of a harvest type salad, can't remember the exact name now, with some tangy dressing and toppings included. It was really, really good.

I really prefer to grate my own cheese but if I'm in a hurry I do use the pre-grated cheese. The bag salad's are good though...I like them. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

My favorite bagged salad is the spring mix or the baby greens. I buy on sale almost exclusively. If I get to the 99 cent store, I'll look for salad there, but the inventory seems to change and they'll have the iceberg mix or the romaine and not my favorites. When I buy the bagged salads, I have less waste than buying lettuce in bulk, and I think it's the convenience factor of not cleaning and tearing apart. The salad is ready to go with a few additions. I also buy cheese shredded - and then on sale always. We use it on so much stuff. ..whit

That's a good point about the waste. I end up throwing away lettuce more often when I buy it alone than I do throwing away the bagged salads, which we usually can finish in one meal. We like cheese on lots of stuff, too. Put cheese on it and I'll eat it. Thanks for your input!

I think the bagged salads are not too much more expensive...neither is the cheese if you buy the cheaper stuff...I pay about $2/lb for cheese wether its shredded or not... I have gotten in some pretty deep discussions over buying grated cheese with my hubby...the way I mutilate cheese trying to grate it, my hubby won't let me buy anything besides the pre-cut stuff.
