Let me tell you about Kiki

Kiki was our pet budgie.
He was one of the smartest pets I ever had. Except for the fact that he didn't really think he was a bird LOL
We got kiki when my son was born. It was a good distraction for my daughter that was feeling a bit jealous of all the attention given to the little one.
Kiki was a very special bird. He was never really afraid of us, even when he came to our home.
We let him adapt to his new home and he allowed us to touch him almost from the beginning.
His cage was never closed.Kiki got used to be outside the cage with us and just go inside to eat or sleep.
When we were home he would perch on our shoulders and talk to us about his day:)
Actually kiki was bilingual, not only he understood when we talked to him in Portuguese or English, but he learned to say " I love you " - English - and "quidu" a familiar and gentle way of saying dear in Portuguese.
Kiki felt he should be with us at the table and wanted to eat our food. I was worried but after talking to the vet I learned that some things would be ok for him to eat and sometimes we would have a little cup with food for him LOL
When we got sheba, our dog, we thought that we might have problems and were ready to keep him in his cage. But not only kiki was fearless and didn't get scared of sheba, but sheba was the gentlest of the dogs and never really hurt him. He even used to sometimes perch on top of her and take a nap:)ALthough during the first months he used to hide a lot in his favorite place, inside my guitar hehehehehe it took us a long time to figure that out .
WHen we weren't home, kiki loved to stay in the bathroom, he thought he had a girlfriend there - the bathroom mirror:)
He didn't like to drink water in his little container, but loved to drink from our cups. He loved to take a bath but not in his bathtub, he like when we put some water in the bathroom sink, and then he would have a great time splashing and washing LOL
HE was a bit shy though, and whenever we had visitors he would hide - underneath our hair! would peak every once in a while to make sure he was safe but complained when we put him in his cage.
WE all loved him and sometimes the kids would have arguments each wanting kiki to be with them.
We lost kiki in the end of February about 8 years ago, and I felt so guilty I cried for hours.
You see, it was more or less my fault.
I knew that kiki loved to drink water from our cups so I always made sure that after our meals I would empty all the cups before anything else. But that day I was distracted and forgot. Kiki fell once in a bowl with water but because the bowl was wide he was able to turn around and climb out. However on that day I started filling up the dishwasher and forgot the cup of water on top of the table. When I turned around it was too late. The cup was to narrow for kiki to turn around, he feel and drowned in the darn cup. I was in such panic I even tried to do cpr and mouth to beak, but of course it didn't work.
We all felt so sad. Katt and Andre specially.
We ended up with a service for kiki and buried him in the back yard.
We had other budgies but none like kiki.
I was looking at some old pictures today and found one of him that I'm sharing with you guys.
Have you ever had a special pet, that was nothing like what it would be expected?

You make me wonder now if we still have any pictures left of our beloved Beta (fish) named Belleraphon, named after this Greek hero:

Our poor little fish was exiled, too, when his tail got caught in the water filter. How can you love a fish so much? He was just really special.

If I don't find a picture, I can paint one as I remember exactly what he looked like even though this was quite a few years ago. I wrote him a little eulogy in verse, too, and would post it here, except it is at our other home. Maybe this summer I'll dig it out and use it to start a discussion alog the lines of what is the goofiest thing you ever did for your pet....;-)
