Linux will be the cheaper option for sure, and you can dual boot it in most PC machines until you figure it out. The big problem with Linux is it has a higher learning curve and that is the reason you don't see it very often in new consumer machines. This is also bone of contention I have with all of the manufacturers who always whine and moan about microsoft being stingy with windows. Personally windows is there toy and if they want to tell a licensee what is and isn't acceptable that is perfectly fine because there are options. But since people want windows and not linux manufacturers think MS should kowtow to them rather than the other way around. If you don't like the rules of the game, change the game, or quit complaining.

I've been using windows xp for years until recently when I heard about xubuntu. It only requires small specs from your pc so even if the pc is old you can still install it. I've just installed it after I got familiar with the live xubuntu cd. You should give it a try if you are not afraid to set sails on new shores...

i use Microsoft windows for both PCs, at home and at office. But i have heard that linux is more robust than MS. it also can be protected from Virus. But I think as MS is more user friendly, we use that.

Linux is the best OS ever! while OS X is the worst I ever experienced. Windows in between them. But you need to choose which linux disto that suites you.. Ubuntu? openSUSE? Mandriva? I use openSUSE, but for noob I suggest go for Linux Mint. Good Luck :)

Linux is an operating system based on POSIX rules which is the same followed by unix like operating system including MAC OS. I am a Linux user and never ever had to return to windows. Well that do not mean Linux is so simple that any person can start working on it from the very first day. It is easy to use but you may need someone to tell you how to use it in the beginning stage. If you are not a geek or do not want to fiddle around the OS understand what each and everything is used then the better method is to find someone who can give you the basics of using the Linux OS. Even each windows user might have got someone to explain the OS when he/she started using it, right? Similarly you may also need someone to take you around the Linux operating system. Trust me, once you get used to it I am sure you will also join the group of users including me who praise the Linux OS. As you might have read somewhere else Linux is stable, secure, virus free and once learned it is user friendlier. Now a days I find it difficult to use windows and whenever I have to use windows I always feel that something is missing in it. The good news is that, you can get Linux for the cost of air.

In my opinion, I don't think Linux is as easy to use as Mac OS X or Windows. It still needs a lot of improvement before it can be called really 'user-friendly', like Mac OS or Windows. There have been much improvement in the right direction though. Another thing to be careful of is the incompatibility of application/installation packages and configuration systems between different distributions of Linux. You can only use .deb files in Debian Linux, .rpm files in Red Hat/Fedora Core, etc... In my experience, using a different distro feels like using a different operating system, as I find myself back to using the console/shell/terminal/etc. (they don't even use the same name for the same application) and scouring configuration files to set the operating system the way I want most of the time... That's why I'll stick to Mac and Windows for the moment. But if you want to taste Linux, I'd recommend to use SuSE Linux. SuSE is, in my opinion, the easiest Linux distro to use. Or, if you rather not alter your hard drive, use a live-cd Linux (Knoppix, Damn Small Linux, etc.)

Like a lot said here, you have to test to say anything on one or the other, Linux is great if you're a minimum interested in computing or programming or web hosting...etc. I have A ubuntu distribution on my desktop PC as well as Windows XP. I plan to put a Debian on a laptop soon. Personally, beeing a programmer, I love Linux, it's so much customisable, not only in the visual aspect.
