Is it ok to lick the spoon after baking?

I was wondering whether it was ok to lick the spoon after mixing ingredients for a chocolate cake, or fudge or cookie mix. Now and then I do and wondered whether it's actually a good thing to do. I was told that one could possibly get Salmonella? Not sure if this is true or not but I thought I would ask. Does anyone know? Do you lick the spoon too?

I guess you probably could catch salmonella if the mixture has raw eggs in it but I have done it for years and never had a problem - neither have either of my kids! xxx

Hi mummymo :) I have also done it for years and had not realised that raw eggs could give you salmonella either :)

it is not the clean thing to do, but if it is you and your son making cookies in the kitchen i say lick the spoon until your tongue is nice and full and you had more then your share. I can not cook dinner unless i taste my food as i go. no one is my family has gotten salmonella as of yet! LOL

My hubby is like that, he likes to taste his food as he goes along cooking too. I have never gotten sick either so I suppose its ok to keep on doing it LOL

well i guess if you baked with fresh eggs then there is definitely a chance of samonella. but i find it so tempting, especially when i bake brownies. it's all so nice and chocolatey like fresh fudge. so sometimes i do - but not the entire spoon and bowl! i think it's so nice for a kid to have a home where there are smells of fresh baking. when i have a kid i hope he or she bakes with me and has lots of fun in his or her family life!

I don't know about the Salmonella, I've never heard of that before. Yes I lick the spoon, but then I usually get a new one and give that to my kids along with the bowl. Unless any of the ingredients of whatever it is you are baking have gone bad, I don't see where licking the spoon could be unhealthy.

I hadn't either until one of the parents at the bus stop told me that and to be careful when licking the spoon. Apparently the other posters have said if there is raw egg in the mixture then you need to be careful. I still lick the spoon even if it does have raw egg in it and have never been sick.

I think the Salmonella concern comes from the raw egg that is in the batter before its cooked. If you are using and mix that does not contain eggs (a just add water kind) then I think it would be ok to lick the spoon. I've licked spoons all my life and have yet to get Salmonella, nor has anyone I've known.

Me too. I was talking to my neighbor at the bus stop while waiting for my son and I was telling her I just finished making a batch of chocolate chip cookies and enoyed licking the spoon (yes the things we talk about LOL) and she said I shouldn't do that because I could get sick and then she mentioned Salmonella, so I thought I would ask. I have never gotten sick either. Thanks for responding supeemom and welcome to Mylot!

When I was a little girl, my two sister's and I would lick the wooden spoon and the bowl, after my mom got finished mixing her Pound Cake. I have never heard of anyone getting sick from it. I would think that as long as you were willing to share a little chocolate with Maddy, everything would be fine, hehe.

The family is running a cake business for 20 years now, and my mom really hates it when one licks the spoon after mixing the batter. I used to do that before but stopped when my mom told me its not a good practice since were making cake for other people..but about getting Salmonella,,,i havent heard of that yet...I dont know if thats also possible since youre only mixing the ingredients.

I can understand your mom saying that considering your making cakes for other people but I am not sure on the Salmonella bit. One of the other posters mentioned you can get it from the raw egg in the mix. Interesting! thanks for responding daryljane!
