School Bus Driver in Fistfight With Students

I got this little tidbit from the ABC News site: An Arizona school bus driver got into a brawl with a student(both female), due to the girl's bad behavior. The daughter of the bus driver jumped into the fray, and was then followed by another female student, I guess to even up the odds. The police want to charge the woman who was driving the bus. I don't agree because the students are under the protection of the driver for the duration of the ride, and, as such, should conform to the rules without causing trouble. What do you wise myLotters think about this?

To be honest I think I would hate to be a school bus driver! I have seen camera shows where students have bullied and beaten others on the buses and the driver is powerless to stop them! I don't know what happened in this case but I am really fed up of kids who think they can act how they please and do what they like without any repercussions happening! If it were my child in this situation I would want to know exactly what had happened and if they had brought this on themselves then that would be the end of it - no sympathy from me! xxx

The student started it by telling the bus driver that she was not scheduled to be a passenger on that bus, mummymo. The driver then told her that she should get off the bus and go to the one she had been assigned to. The girl was not telling the truth, so I guess she wanted to pick a fight with the driver.

law is that adults cannot attack students, whether in self defense or not, so that is why she was charged, I do see the predicament she was in though, she had to break it up but how

I've seen some of those teens, winterose, and they are the same size as adults, so I don't see why an adult should not defend themselves if attacked by one.

I do not think that kids should be in trouble, they should be doing nothing to take the drivers attention away from driving. It got out of hand and the driver might get in trouble, but I don't think the law should be involved.

I suspect, Thoroughrob, that it is the parents who have brought the police into this matter. You know how quickly everyone wants to sue these days.

How bad was the behavior? A fistfight, please the driver is supposed to be the adult. Surely there were other avenues she could explore before starting a brawl on her bus. I do think she needs a way to discipline the students on her bus, but I don't think brawling with a student is the answer. I could see where they would want to charge her with assault. Maybe she could plea it down, but I don't think she should be driving the bus any longer. If she can't control the kids without beating on them, then she shouldn't be driving the bus.

I don't think that the bus driver should have gotten into a fist fight with the student unless the student was like hitting the bus driver first...and then naturally she would defend herself...I can't really understand why they would take it far enough to fist fight though...if the woman was trying to protect the student that wasn't a good way...

From what I understand, jhl, the student began shoving the bus driver when she stopped the bus and got off. Of course, the bus driver shoved back.
