How do you store/protect the movies and music you download? Do you have special containers,do you make duplicates, or do you store them on a seperate drive, maybe a portable. In Thailand they can deteriorate rather quickly, so I want to protect my favorite movies, and as I have some rare old music, I'd like to protect that also. Any ideas?

Well i have a 400GB Hard disk. So i don't have to worry about space in my hard disk. and all i have to worry about is to not to loose my data files from any virus or spyware.

I have a lot of movies and music stored on an 80 gb portable drive which is good as it allows me to take movies and music wherever I go. However I have many others which I guess I should put on other portable hardware.

Unfortunately my player doesn't handle blue ray technology.

CDs and DVDs can deteriorate but if they are doing so rather quickly then this is most probably due to the quality of disk being used. It can also be the result of a CD or DVD drive that requires cleaning, since this restricts the laser and reduces the depth of impression. Like most people I tend to use CDs and DVDs to store music and video, but I also archive it on an external drive. The current sizes of hard drives makes it practical to purchase an external USB drive to use for storage only.

Storing files on CD and DVDs aren't exactly reliable as like you said, they deteriorate quickly.. Even a hard disk is more reliable than CD and DVDs....I would, however, suggest the use of solid-state memory and USB thumbdrives or SD, CF cards etc...They are more long lasting compared to even CD, DVD and hard disks because they have no movable parts..
