In the early hours of this morning, I was awoken by a deep rumbling noise, then my bedroom began to shake, these noises and shacking aslo awoke my 9 year old son... but not my parnter (who is a heavy sleeper), he just rolled over and carried on sleeping lol.
When I got up and did my usual morning routiene (getting the boy ready for school ect) I didn't get a chance to watch the news as he dominates the T.V. with kids programs. So I didn't get chance to glimps what had happened at nearly 1am.
However, when we got to the bus stop, other mothers asked me if i had woken to the tremor, well at least I wasn't going mad lol...
Anyhow, having had time to read the news online, I now know what happened, we had a small earthquake (5.3 on the richter scale). This is the first time I have ever actually felt one of Britains quakes, as though we have around 200 a year they are so small no one really notices them.
A news article I read has said that it is the "worse" one we have had in 24 years.
Here are a few bits from the article I read:
"Last Updated: Wednesday, 27 February 2008, 08:44 GMT
The biggest earthquake to hit the UK in 24 years has toppled chimneys and caused traffic delays in parts of Lincolnshire.
The epicentre of the 5.2-magnitude tremor was eight kilometres east of Market Rasen, near Ludford.
Lincolnshire Police said they had more than 200 calls from concerned residents, but no-one was injured.
Part of Trinity Street in Gainsborough was closed due to falling debris and some streets in Louth were also closed.
Falling masonry
Bennett Simpson from the British Survey said the quake measured at 5.3 on the Richter Scale.
"This is a very significant earthquake for the UK , we have about 200 earthquakes a year in the UK but a magnitude 5 is a large one," he said."
"The main 10-second quake, which struck at 0056 GMT at a depth of 15.4km (9.6 miles), was the biggest recorded example since one with a magnitude of 5.4 struck north Wales in 1984."
