Winter time is in full swing here. It is snowing, windy and very cold. We have about 5 inches of snow on the ground as I type this discussion.
If you are exposed to the elements of winter, there is the chance of hypothermia.
There are a few tips that may prevent you from getting hypothermia though. You just need to take a few precautions and stay alert for the danger signs.
1. Dress in layers. My Mother always stressed this so it has become a natural part of my winter dressing. I don't even have to think about it.
2. Cover your head, face and neck with a hood, scarf or balaclava or even a hat. Wear gloves to protect your hands. Do not forget your feet. You will need warm socks.
3. Stay Hydrated. It is very important to stay hydrated. Being dehydrated can quickly contribute to hypothermia. Drink water and avoid drinks with caffeine. Avoid alcohol as well.
4. Always carry some food with you. Granola mix or trail mix is great to keep with you to give you energy. I like to keep energy bars with me.
5. Be smart. Do not try to show how brave or strong you are.
Even the strongest people can get hypothermia when outdoors in winter. Don't be a victim or a statistic.
What do you do to protect yourself from the elements in winter?

I don't really do much. Although my husband makes me wear a coat and earmuffs (I have recurring ear infections). I have been know to walk outside to get the mail when there is snow and or ice on the ground with no shoes and socks on and in short sleeves. Not the smartest thing to do, but I probably won't do that again.

These are good tips. I have lived in Northern Ohio all my life, I know how winter can be. I like to hybernate when I can. If I do have to venture out its dashing to the car, the store or wherever. I don't waste time getting in where its warm. I do dress in layers if I do have to be out, that really works. Then its also easy when you get someplace that is warmer but not all the way warm. Just take off a layer or two and still be warm. I have done work outside in the winter, layering does work.

wear goggles in a bad storm it is easy to get snow blind,
by the way, what happened to the old wives tale of drinking a hot brandy before going out in the cold?

Yep I was born, raised and lived most of my life in Michigan - I do all the things you listed here, all very important and I can't think of anything else to add.

Stay warm, keep covered when we leave the house including warm jacket, scarves, hats and gloves.
