Why are people so money HUNGRY?

Okay, I'm sure we all need money but why are some people so money hungry and go crazy and do crazy things? I believe that everything takes time and with all the effort and time we put in it will soon pay off. Starting off something free and earning little is good enough and I see it as a way of working up. Seriously, why though?
