What is the STRANGEST thing in your kitchen?

Opossum - this opossum was caught in a live trap and brought into the house for grandchildren to see up close. This is not recommended as opossums can be very dangerous with long sharp nails and teeth plus they are known to carry germs and desease.

Ok, had a horrid time figuring out what interest to post this discussion under but figure when people start reading the answers to this question it's got to make other people happy... I would have to say the strangest thing in my kitchen was the opossum (or possum as some say) - pictured here! Yes, he/she was in a trap. We raise chickens and for several days were not getting any eggs so purchased a live trap (the animal is not hurt in and way and can be moved to a different location). I certainly did not expect that location to be the kitchen. It was however brought in so the grandkids could see it and then taken several miles away hopefully not to return here. Are you happy this wild animal found in Michigan isn't in your Kitchen? So, what's the strangest thing you've had in your kitchen?

You are wild, Faith! My kitchen is CLEAN. Well, not spotless clean literally but it only has what a kitchen "should" have. You know, pots and pans, cutlery, tables, chairs, you catch the drift.:P I had a friend once who reared chicks in his kitchen - as PETS. I asked him if he meant to ever eat them. He said no, just to "play with" as pets. Of all places, the kitchen!!! I can't imagine how healthy those chicks will grow up to be seeing their brothers and sisters slaughtered next to them day in day out.:PP

Oh I can assure you I prefer my kitchen like yours and was very very happy to see the 'animal' leave. Chickens in the kitchen NO WAY unless their going in the fry pan! We do eat the 'roosters' from time to time but figured out that each time one is butchered the chickens go on strick and don't lay for several days so in future roosters will be removed to a more isolated part of the property before their heads are chopped off :( I hate that part but love the fresh eggs.

Well I can attest to that fact but trying to figure out if they're not laying what do they do with them? Do the eggs just stay inside them for days? Is it like being constipated or something? That could be very uncomfortable as a few of them are laying pretty good sized eggs :)

Going on strike, eh? LOL Faith, you make me laugh!! HAHA But I have it on good grounds that if you make a hen scared, she will not lay eggs.:P

Yes I'm glad that the opossum isn't in my kitchen or even in the yard. The strange that gets into my kitchen is my grandson when he decides to wash up his breakfast. Other than that I really don't have any strange things in the kitchen at the moment.

LOL you are lucky - I was happy when this thing was removed, they are really ugly animals. Oh my granddaughter loves to 'do dishes' but always ends up making more mess than if I did the dishes myself. Her brother decided to help one day and they were both covered in dish soap bubbles.

My grandson is 19 years old. I have to harp at him to clean up after himself and I do get tired of it. I remember when he and his sister both loved to do the dishes and the floor was all wet and covered with soap bubbles, as well as the counter and them as well. I miss those days as well as being glad that they are over too. can you be of 2 minds concerning kids?

I have a problem also finding things to discuss, but this is a good one Faith...I have a very old Mickey Mouse plastic bank way back from the 30's..It belonged to my husbands grandmother...Don't even ask how it ended up in my kitchen, because i ahve n idea..haha....He's about 8" tall and ugly really haha

Oh dear that's just what everyone wants in their kitchen an ugly Mickey Mouse bank :) I am however guessing that bank could be worth more than what is in it - keep that baby :) Actually how I came up with this idea was going through my million and one pictures trying to figure out what I could do with some of them. Just didn't want to do the normal 'have you seen a opossum before' or 'we caught this opossum' :)

Oh wow, I have a dog kennel in my kitchen, but I don't know about having a wild animal in mine, you are brave..lol There strangest thing in my kitchen right now is on the kitchen table are all my husbands tools. Since he had been working on our broken down van, and we have no garage, he is keeping his tools on the kitchen table. So now we are eating in the living room. Though it doesn't bother my family, it bothers me because I like to eat at least one meal at the table and not in front of the tv..(I know it can be turned off, but hubby taking a meal break also has to watch tv..)

Oh I know how you feel about the eating in front of the TV, we were doing it faithfully for a time, eating one meal at the table that is, but got out of habit again. Last week when the grandkids were here my grandson (5) actually suggested we 'have a real meal at the table'. He helped set the table and everything... One of my ex-husbands was a transmission specialist and I remember the times he had tools and transmissions even on my kitchen table :(

I have a fish aquarium in my kitchen. Was only supposed to be there on a tempory basis while I got the lounge carpeted and a unit bought, but finances haven't allowed the luxury of the carpet yet and too heavy to move now. Also I temporarily had two guinea pigs in an indoor hutch until there outdoor hutch and area had been built. At this moment in time I am typing at the computer with a rabbit sat on my lap. Ellie :D

Actually at one time years ago we had a fish tank in our kitchen intentionally. My oldest was very little and as I spent most of my time in the kitchen back then that was a safe place for the fish - where I could keep an eye on my son so as not to 'add to' the tank. Some of his contributions included emptying a baby bottle in, a jar of baby food, numerous toys, and a dirty diaper.

LOL, the worse my little one has done is put a whole tub of their food in so I had to immediately change water and sit him down and explain that mummy will measure and then he can if he wants each day but that too much food can kill them, he has been feeding them everyday since, bless but the correct amounts.

Luckily, I have not had to experience the opossums in the kitchen. They are everywhere here and usually the dog gets them when they are in our backyard. My son has to do a perimeter check every night before bed to make sure the dog hasn't caught some animal and killed it. We didn't find the last opossum for 4 days, so needless to say, it wasn't a thrilling experience dealing with it. We also have raccoons that play in the trees at night in our yard. I try hard to keep him away from them because they are rather small and don't tear up our trash or anything. We also have a few rats and a couple of mice, but again, all of this is outside. The rats and mice get into the grill after we've used it, but then we set the dog after them. Sometimes he's quick enough to catch, but most times not. As for IN the kitchen, other than a occasional lizard or gecko that I would have to catch before my cats did, the craziest thing in my kitchen would have to be my 14-year old son. On his nights to cook and/or do the dishes, it's like a comedy show or carnival show. He talks to the dishes, uses all kinds of different voices, he'll pretend the dish water is quicksand, he instigates Mortal Kombat between silverware; he's a trip! Now if only he could stop doing all of that during school, but at least his medication is helping him alot in school. It just wears off about 7pm. I have to either go outside or go into another room to laugh.

I've seen raccoons in our area and actually we half thought that might be what was eating the eggs - I was disappointed as I think they are cute as can be. Our dog has to be tied when he's outside because he'll run for miles and miles and who knows when he'll come back so no help from him. Oh your 14 year old sounds like my now 16 year old - count your blessings dear mine refuses to take the medication so does much as your son but will do it in the middle of the night most times.

Well luckily we have a privacy fence all around our backyard. So if they get caught within those walls, it's their fault. As for my son, he was hesitant to take the medication too, but then I'm the parent, so he takes them and now he sees the benefit. Also, now I don't kill him HaHa

Don't see an image on this discussion so maybe I overlooked something. Ewwww, how could you stand it knowing you had a possum in your kitchen? I would have moved. The strangest thing in my kitchen would be me because I don't like to cook. My husband would think I was sick if I made a meal at home. Next in line would be our stove and oven. They are the orignals and old. This house was built in 1965 but we never did replace the stove and oven. I use the microwave to heat food such as leftovers so the oven hasn't been on in a long time. Guess they still work..lol

LOL had me worried you couldn't see the photo - I thought maybe it had gotten deleted for some stupid reason... Wow 1965 and still works? Show us all how little they get used :) I'm the same way, maybe a couple times a week I'll cook but for the most part now days it's each for his own. I just went up and made some scrambled eggs for myself (it's almost 4 p.m. and I haven't eaten) and my son was there making mac and cheese (in the microwave)... I used the stove for my eggs :)

I have had a little chipmonk in my kitchen, and i've had a bat in my kitchen. Those are probably the two most strange things that have been in my kitchen. Other then my husband that is. HE's pretty strange himself. and what he was doing in the kitchen is beyond me, he doesn't do dishes and rarely cooks, so i'm not sure! lol.

LOL - I've heard a lot of women say their husband in the kitchen is a strange thing, teenaged boys can be just as strange or stranger, playing drums on everything, dancing strange kids' these days dances, talking funny and making the biggest mess possible :(

have had the possums in the barn but never in the kitchen, lol. that would be strange - though I have often had live chickens in my kitchen. I guess currently the strangest thing in my kitchen is a stoneware butter churn - though probably not altogether strange - perhaps not so very common.

Well, this opossum was trapped outside and carried in the house for the grandkids to 'see' once they did that it was taken back out and off the property (still alive). It was never out of the trap in the house... I'm guessing there are many people who wouldn't even know what a butter churn was if they saw it - those are actually worth some money these days. Not so strange to me but certainly uncommon and possibly strange to many.

Yes I am VERY glad that there are no wild animals in my kitchen, unless you count my daughter. I guess the strangest thing in my kitchen would have to be bubbles and playdough. I keep the my daughters bubbles and playdough on the highest shelf in our kitchen because it's the only place in our house that she can't get to them. I know those aren't very strange. Maybe I'll think of something better later to day. I'm still on my first cup of coffee.

Oh no problem, I had a couple glasses of diet Pepsi (my caffine of choice) before I started this discussion :) I thought the kitchen was where you were supposed to keep bubbles and play dough - when my kids were growing up and now with grandkids coming over I still keep them there, easier to clean up not in the carpet.

Hmm, I don't have anything TOO strange in my kitchen. No live animals! When I was growing up in Michigan, we once had a wild baby rabbit living in our kitchen though! It was in a cage too. My uncle who worked for a lawn company found it and was afraid it would die on its own so he took it to my mom. We gave it to the DNR after about a week so it could be raised to be released back to the wild. I am looking at my kitchen and the only thing really out of place is my sewing machine. We never replaced our dining room table after Katrina so the counter is the only place I can sew at the moment.

Hehe, I could see how you'd have a problem figuring out where to put this one! Thankfully I've never had an opossum in my kitchen, though I know people who have had them in a stew pot. :P I don't think there's much in my kitchen that is terribly strange, except for occasionally my horrible cooking experiments. I suppose some people would find the assortment of herbs in my kitchen to be kind of weird, especially the ones that are considered poisonous and that I have solely for religious use.

Yea poisonous herbs in the kitchen would certainly be strange to me. I have over the years had herbs in the kitchen but they were all eatable... If I ever come to your house I will make sure NOT to eat the plants :) I do know a lot of people eat possum but that's one I'll pass on - they just look so very much like big huge rats, yuk!

About that opossum, you can keep him. I have not found anything strange in my kitchen except maybe some lids or papers hidden under the dishwasher, some silver flies or bugs in the flour, and maybe something like a card that was replaced. But it gets too cold here for any animals to hide there and besides I do not live on a farm so the only = well there was a time, when a sparrow flew into our kitchen and was there a few hours while my husband and I were out grocery shopping. Well then my husband had to put him or her outside and then there were the rather annoying bees and bumblebees, but no opossum, thank you. I have no idea what I would have done and I would wonder how he got up here.

Lol Faith, for a while there, I thought you are talking about a ghastly ghost lurking in your kitchen. "grin" My kitchen is what a "normal" kitchen is supposed to look like. Don't you think the cage is too small for your lovely possi? I don't have much knowledge about the nature of opossum. However, Possi closely resembled my bunny in terms of shape and size. When my bunny first entered into my life, she was as small as the palm of my hand. Really adorable. I let her roamed around my house and my kitchen was her favorite place. No sooner when she turned 3 months old, I found out that Bunny was munching on all the electrical wires of my kitchen appliances. It was a miracle that Bunny didn't fried herself. I immediately called a carpenter to build a small barnhouse for Bunny. It was right outside the patio which is adjacent to my kitchen. :)
