Ok this is a really weird one.. Looking for comments from fellow cat lovers out there. My big cat does this almost every time he is eating or drinking. When he is done eating, he scoots his paws across the floor or his "table area" and looks like he is trying to "cover up" the food. When he gets a drink he moves his feet as well. It looks like he is dancing while standing still. I was wondering if anyone knew what this meant? Does your cat do something similar?

Covering it up is exactly what he's trying to do. In the wild, an animal will often eat their fill but there will be some left so they'll attempt to bury it or cover with leaves/dirt to save it for the next meal. I have two young females here and they rarely empty their dish entirely, always leaving a few bites. One of them ALWAYS tries to bury it, scratching on the linoleum.

I often wonder what they think when they are doing stuff like that.

Yep, he's trying to cover his food to protect it. Lots of cats do it all the time. My cat went through a phase of doing the same thing around the time we moved. I guess he was feeling a little insecure and so was trying to bury his dish so "others" wouldn't get to it. Mind you, he usually empties his dish when he eats, so I don't know what he was saving my trying to bury the empty dish, but whatever... He would occasionaly do it with the water dish as well, which resulted in water slopping onto the floor. Luckily, he started drinking out of the dogs dish (which is bigger, so he can't jostle it), so that problem solved itself.

2 of my cats drink out of a table fountain. The big one looks like he swims when he is drinking, the paws go back and forth, gliding on the table, and the other cat moves her paw out along the circumference of the fountain while she drinks. Cats are silly yet wonderful creatures.

This is called, Cache. Wild animals, will eat their kill, and the left overs are "hidden" for later. I have seen this on many nature show over the years and the wild cats do this, as well as bears. I guess whatever you are feeding your cat is delicious enough to want to keep the rest "fresh" for later. I wonder if you had this cat all his life? Some house cats don't do this and it could be because they never experienced a time when dinner wasn't available or late.

We rescued Nemo when he was very small. He was starving, only weighing a pound when he should have weighed at least five. He has grown to a 25 pound cat, very large, big paws.. he has a beastly appearance but he is the biggest chicken out of all of our cats. Thank you for your response. It makes so much sense now.. from when he got him, he was so hungry. He used to growl when he ate, he was such a wild little creature.

Enchanted, your welcome. Your little one was growling because he was warning others to stay away from the food. He was going to eat it and would fight for it. I am glad that he found a wonderful and loving home. My neighbors had a kitten, covered in mud and leaves, all matted, brazenly walk into their home behind the other cats, and start eating. Growling too when the others were near. There were two huge dogs there too but this one was starving. She found herself a wonderful home and lives the life of Reilly. That is my brother's cats name, Reilly. lol

Nemo was pulled from a car engine by my dad one cold fall morning and he brought him home, infested with fleas and smelling moldy, old, and scared of everything but now he is big, beautiful, and loving-- still a fraidy cat though. I think he remembers his car ride in the engine!

I had an outside cat do that last summer. I didnt realize she was due so soon and she followed me around all day trying to tell me she needed a box. I didnt get her clue and she started dropping kittens on the deck. We got her a box really fast, where she settled in and had the rest of them.

I have never seen the "dancing" thing, but my cat often pretends to "cover up" his food dish after eating. Maybe trying to protect it from intruders?? I just tell people he is saving his lefovers for later. Ha

I think they are trying to save their left overs for later.. hiding them from the other cats or people that will clean their dish. Amazing!

My cat used to "scrape up" his food as if he was burying it. It was like he was full but was saving it for later and didn't want anyone else to "know it was there!" It's really funny! Maybe it's similar to a dog buring a bone or something. As for the funny water-dancing thing, I don't have a clue. It sounds really cute though!

He must be saving it for later.. even though they know their dishes will be cleaned when they are through eating. Its so funny to watch.

Mine don't "cover up" their food so much-but they do like to play with water. Both Grace and Darla do the little water dance, but only if drinking out of a glass. Yes, they much prefer a glass to their bowls. Little princesses. :) Loki, on the other hand, just pushes the glass on the floor. Usually the one on the nightstand, and while you are sleeping. Nothing like a cold water, broken glass wake-up call at 3:30 in the morning!

My cat paws the deck, but thankfully doesn't scratch it, right before she drinks water. It's really funny, I have no idea what she thinks she might be doing. The other funny thing is if you scratch her right above the tail she starts licking her lips, and if you scratch the right spot on her jaw she starts kicking you with her hind leg.
