Did you buy your dog from a pet store? Why? Adopt from a shelter or rescue? Which one? What made you choose rescue? Purchase from a private seller? (ie. newspaper ad, someone who had accidental puppies etc. AKA Back yard breeder) Purchase from a professional breeder? (ie breeder who shows, does health testing etc..) What made you choose this option? Found your dog on the streets or dog found you? What made you keep him/her?

I have had my dog since the day he was born. I had a pure breed chow female. She got pregnany and had 9 puppies. They were all girls but one. The boy had a problem, she had trouble getting him out so we had to help her then he wasnt breathing. So we did everything to get him going. Finally he did. And after that I decided I wanted to keep that one and get rid of the others. So we did and I have had him ever since. Hes gonna be 6 this year.

I found my cross breed Jack Russell puppy on the cold deserted streets last December. It was a cold wintry 2a.m. walking back to my apartment when I saw him shivering in a plastic bag. Hungry and too weak to walk all the way with me, I carried him back. Initially, he felt very insecured as he would simply eat non stop (afraid that he might be abandoned again and don't when the next meal is coming). It also took some time before he would go out and take walks with me for nature call - just would not go out without a leash attached to him and me. It is just so pitiful.

Aww... that is heart breaking. I just can't comprehend someone leaving a dog in that condition. :( Glad that you found him and turned his luck around. Good for you!

Have you had his patellas checked? Also joint supplements are good too if there's a weakness at the joint. We have our dogs patellas checked at 12 mos. and then at every vet appointment we have them give a feel.

I got mine from my relatives, it was still a pup when my uncle gave it to me. It's a cross-breed of Shi Tzu and Poodle. Has the character of a poodle and the physical attribute of a Shi Tzu, and I consider it as a constant companion when I'm at home..

Yay! I'm not alone! *g* I just felt that with young kids in my home, raising the dogs ourselves would ensure the safety and bonding necessary to work with our kids. We also had a cat. They didn't become best buds, kitty was mean. ha. Kitty just hid from our dog until she had passed away. then we added more dogs :)

I have 2 dogs, my oldest I got from an acquaintance that was going to bring him to a shelter because his wife had had a baby and couldn't deal with both the baby & the dog anymore. I just had to have him he was the cutest thing, that was 9 years ago. My youngest was a rescue from the OSPCA, she was seized twice by them within 6 months. She was seized the first time from a dog sled operation in which none of the animals were taken care of properly. Then she was seized a 2nd time from her 2nd owners because she was basically "crated" and ignored. I found her while searching the OSPCA website (I was looking for a new companion for my eldest because he had lost his play-mate six months prior). I fell in love with her big ears & blue eye immediately and couldn't wait to meet her to see how her demeanor was especially since she was only 6 months old. When I met her I knew right off the bat that she was a perfect match for my eldest & our family so I gave her her "forever home".

Franklin's rescue picture. - This was the picture the rescue site had of my dog when he was up for adoption. We changed his name because I just couldn't stand the though of standing at the back door yelling"Dee Oh Gee!" (get it? D-O-G), it was cute, but not for the long term.
We got our dog, Franklin, from a rescue group, which had rescued him from a pound. I liked getting him this way, because they foster the dogs in peoples homes, so they can tell you a little bit more about their temperement than you would find out at a shelter. He's a medium sized mix-breed and the first dog I've ever had, and I feel I got really lucky getting such a good dog. He's very well behaved and has learned lots of tricks because he is so eager to please (... and really likes dog treats).

Our cockers have passed but Peanut is still with u - Our dogs back in the day
The very first dog I ever got myself was at the shelter because she was going to be put down the next day and I couldn't live with myself if I were to let that happen. She turned out to be one of the BEST dogs ever! Then we got two cocker spaniels at two different places, both were breeders however back yard breeders in which one was a rescue. Then we had taken in a chihuahua who was in need of a home for the owner couldn't keep it thanks to the landlord, one we took in was a stray and found him a good home, the german shepherd and the lab was from a breeder, and our now german shepherds are from a breeder and two chihuahua mix puppies are from a breeder rescue.

I don't have any pets at the moment. The last dogs I had, Gunther and Daphne, Mini-Schnauzers, were rescues. I got them from a Mini-Schnauzer rescue in Georgia. They were both older (8 and 9) and had to be adopted together. I saw them and just fell in love. I chose to adopt an older dog (dogs) because I don't particularly like the option of training a puppy. Older dogs are usually house-trained and leash-trained. Mine were just perfect. They loved going for rides in the car, loved going for walks. Daphne played like a puppy almost. Gunther was a little different. He didn't really know how to play. And he always looked a little sad. But he was with me all the time. If I got up and left a room, he came, too. Both were such sweet old souls. They were 12 and almost 13 when they passed away. I am sure they would have lived longer if they had been taken care of the 8 years I didn't have them. I would adopt an older dog again, too. I was so worth it!

Aww... I've seen some really cute dogs at my local shelter too. It's so hard to leave without a pup. Although I support the shelter, their policy is that all your household members have to be spayed/neutered to adopt. Because I do have pure bred show dogs, I can't adopt a shelter dog there. I have mostly little dogs, I live out in the country and want a bigger dog to scare off predatory animals. I was looking into adopting a doberman or a mix and they said they couldn't adopt one out to me. So if I choose a larger breed I'll have to sort through rescues or else last resort go to a pro breeder.

Our dog is a golden retriever. I was in contact with a breeder who was planning a litter and I was going to get one of her pups for $600 but the humane society happened to get a golden in so we adopted her instead. She was a frequent flier at the humane society- this was her third time in in as many years and I have no idea why- she is an absolute sweetheart and we are so happy to have her. My favorite way to get animals is from the humane society or a rescue because they are unwanted and need love. That said, when I am looking for a pet, I do also check the pet stores and if I have a specific breed in mind I will also look for breeders- the golden was the first time I had done that but my husband and daughter want a smaller dog this time so I may look for a specific breed again. Cats I have always gotten from "oopsie" pet owners...I guess they are generally easier to find...?

Aww! I'm glad you found your Golden local in rescue. When I first sought my Rat Terriers there weren't a lot of them in rescue & no breeders in my area. At the time they were considered a "rare" breed and are still misc. in AKC. My dogs are 10-20Lbs. Now a lot of people are capitalizing on them or mixing them with other breeds to make designer small dogs :( If you're looking for a nice small dog, check out the Rat Terrier ResQ they are easy low maintenance dogs that don't shed a lot & live long and healthy lives. I love mine. ResQ will provide transport to you so don't worry about location. They get along well with other breeds and as someone else posted here, they are in foster homes so you get a feel for their personality before you commit. I breed them and have puppies available, but I'd rather see one rescued first. I have room to keep my puppies and allow a rescue to find a home if need be. :)

I get all my pets from a shelter or rescue, there are to many pets being killed because there isnt any homes for them. For every dog bought from a pet shop or breeder is 1 less place for a dog in a shelter. So thousands of dogs are put to sleep by shelters because there is no place for them to go. Yes Im an animal activist! Jimmy

I have a lot of respect for that. Although I'm a breeder, I do what I can to ensure my puppies never go to shelters. I also have initiated some programs to help my breed rescue and donate $ & food to my local shelter as well.

I bought my dog from petland. She is a puggle that is so cute. The reason i bought is because u wont find a dog like this in a shelter.

I have seen a few of those at the local shelter when I dropped off some food. They were cute. I guess the person who bred the litter saw that they were a new designer breed and thought they could make $ selling them. Then she got overwhelmed with her remaining puppies and gave them to the shelter.
