Fudging on the income!

I know several people that "fudge" on their income and do odd jobs or sell things under the table for cash so they don't have to turn in as income. Do you know anyone that does this and would you ever turn them in?

yes I know people who do it, and I would never turn them in. The government gets enough taxes off people as it is. It is hard enough for people to make a living as it is, (especially with gas $3.00+ per gallon), so if a person can make a little money under the table and not get taxed on it, I support them. I cant promise you that I would pay taxes on jobs I could do under the table either, especially when the government manages to waste most of our tax dollars instead of concentrating on the things that really matter...

if it wasn't illegal for me to do in my job, I would actually advise people of how they could arrange it so that more of their income would be tax free...

I do know a few people that have done this before and I don't think that i would turn them in because i mean we aren't going five years old again and i am going to say im going to tell on you...because i am sure that everyone has done that somewhere and sometiems in their lives rather it be on ebay or even a garage sell or something like that...everyone does it from time to time and no one ever turns them in for it...

See there's another issue (JHL930's mention of garage sales). If you follow the law & pay taxes on that "income" from your garage sale, you're being taxed twice or three times. You bought those items with your salary that you pay taxes on, you may have paid a sales tax when you purchased the items and now you're suppose to pay an income tax on basically reclaimed income- do you see what I mean? It's not right.

I know several that do this and I have never turned them in to the authorities. I don't agree with one person in particular who does this and one day this person will get caught. Avoiding income taxes and taking cash can be risky.

It's best for me to avoid knowing anyone's personal tax information when it comes to taking cash in order to continue collecting from another agency. It's wrong but I won't be the one in court defending myself when this person gets caught.

I used to work under the table all year round at a pizza place! hehe i'd just have a few hours on the books and most of the hours off. its really the only way to earn a decent living doing that job! Only problem is, if you do it for a long time, then you dont get any pension plan money stored up, and no employment insurance. But where i am from under the table pizza store jobs are a dime a dozen. There are tons of them.

I wouldn't turn them. I've been meaning to look into this idea that the above poster mentioned, that federal income taxes really aren't a legal tax. I want to make sure I am crystal clear before making decisions about filing of course, but it isn't right that we're taxed on our income. Being taxed for your labor is basically a form of slavery-we're giving 25% (more or less) of our work to the government. I don't have an issue with paying sales tax, excise tax, property taxes etc- those are all goods that are being taxed. But our work/labor should be our own.

haha well first of all i would never turn anyone inf or anything like that. secondly, if you research it, there is no specific law that states we are required to pay income taxes. everyone just does. of course it might cost you a bit in legal fees to prove that. but i know a lot of people (myself included) that don't even file. i have even heard of a couple ex-IRS employees that don't file their income taxes, because they know they are under no real obligation to. you should look into it!

I think both my husband and I have done odd jobs for cash or not earned $600 and did not report the income. Had those people come up with 1099 for us, then we would have reported it. If you got audited then the other party would be in trouble.

I know several people that do this. Both however are entirely different situations. One situation means getting paid under the table helps the person in question get to work and get things done, not to mention help pay for odd things because their first job doesn't really pay them as much as it should. That I can understand. That's helpful to them. They definitely need that extra money. The other situation is someone that likes being dishonest and cheating the people that matters most. He works for awhile and works under the table so he does not have to pay child support. That person in question is my father. This guy still owes me thousands of dollars in back support and if I could prove it, I would because it's just getting ridicilous.

Don't we all do this here at mylot with our earnings, LOL, but I don't get involved in other peoples lives, what they do is not my business, however if they were stealing from work to do this extra then that would be different and I would tell them to stop and if they didn't I would inform the manager.
