I want to start an exercise routine but am unsure what I should do as I have never done any form of exercise except dancing.
So, my questions to all of you are:
1. what types of exercise do you enjoy the most
2. the least?
3. which are the best for your health?
4. Which ones burn the most calories?
5. what do you reccomend to someone who needs all round body toning?
Thanks!

I like running the most and the least will be sitting around doing nothing.. hehe.. As for best for health will be any forms of exercise as long as u keep moving ^_^ ALl round body toning will be fast walking, really fast walking till u can sweat.. It can tone u and it wun make your thighs become muscular ^_^ But burning most calories will definitely be running or jogging because of the amount of sweat lost plus the fats being burned to give u the energy ^_^
ANd dancing, yes, it's a good form of exercise as it can tone one's body and burn lotsa calories ^_^ hehe

Dancing and running sound like the best so far for burning calories. I just may have to go downtown more. haha. I could always incorperate some running into my walking work outs. Thank you for the advice on running and burning calories. I break out into a light sweat when I walk but nothing extreme. Then again, I don't sweat much anyway.

Walking is definitely great exercise, but my favorite exercise is a pilates video called "Burn and firm pilates" with Ellen Barrett, founder of www.buffgirlsfitness.com I sewar, I live by that one video. It gives your entire body a workout, so you're not just feeling sore and stretched in one place, and then fat and lazy in others (i hate feeling liek my whole body didn't get a workout and only part of it did!) But it's a great video! It takes a while to get used to it, but the key is to not give up and not be afraid to hit the pause button and take a water break! After all, you can't just jump into a 45 minute video and expect yourself to do it all with no breaks! If I can find the video online, I'll send you a link to it.

That sounds like a good video sammi, I will check it out. if it's not too expensive i just might buy it ;)
I know what you mean about feelingas tho only one part of your body is being worked out. I walk alot lately and I find that my legs and bum are sore from working out but my arms are still flabby. I have a ddr, and I find that provides a good work out. If you really get into it and swing syour arms around like mad then your upper body gets some exercise too.

well I have been told you can't beat walking that it is the best exercise of all, I try to walk as much as possible but I am very lazy when it comes to things like that, I have an excercise bike but I have found you have to do more than just look at it... :)

haha that's the way I am, I wish you could just look at the equipment and burn the calories. I try to walk as much as possible but my weight has not even budged! The snow clearing here is pretty bad so walking around outside is not really an option

Honestly I most types of exercise, however treadmills and bikes and the like can get old and boring really fast. The key I think to enjoying exercise is to mix it up and do different things so it doesn't get mind numbing to begin with.
You have three types of workouts really: Cardio, muscle building, and muscle toning.
All are beneficial. To lose weight cadio is good, however building muscle will allow you to burn more calories through out the day even while you are not doing anything. Muscle toning makes you look better, gives definition and can also double for both cardio and muscle building depending on how you do it.
I would suggest buying a total gym. I have been using one for years and you can get them at retail stores for couple hundred dollars. It's fun and effective.
Another good option is an Eliptical machine. It will focus mostly on your legs (your biggest muscles) and is definetly a cardio workout, it's also fun.
Stay away from treadmills, bad for the joints.
My favorite exercise is a boxing heavy bag. It's fun, you get out aggression, and the pounds will melt off.
Best of luck.

buying a home gym is not an option because I can not afford to fork out all that money up front. Because I danced for so long I have very large leg muscles, to the point I look a little unproportionate. I would prefer, if possible to get RID of some of the leg muscle, I defiantly do not want ot build any up at all.
Boxing sounds fun tho :)

The one thing you should invest in is yourself. Buying home equipment is much less expensive than a gym membership. I still stand buy the reccomendation for the Total Gym, or the punching bag. Both are less than $300. Put it on a credit card, or a retail store's in house credit, and you can get it payed off in 6 monthes at $50. They all have 0% interesest offers of 6 months or more for new cards.
Something to think about...

that does sound like fun, I just might have to give it a try. I do not think that I can afford to put it even on my credit card tho. Do gyms have a like... drop in fee?

wow, if dancing can't do all that, i don't know what will.. lol.. seriously, i think the best cardio would be dancing because you move almost every muscle and joint.. but to build muscles then you'll need weight lifting.. right now, i'm attempting walking.. i used to play college softball but since i've graduated, i lost track..

I got sick and had to quit my dance classes. I am still unable to go to them three times a week for a year, with my health that is a major ocmmitment that I am unable to make. I can not tell how I will be feeling from one day to the next so signing up for such a long period of time is a big risk for me.

I think that the best exercise that you could possibly do would be to walk because i use to be really really overweight and then i started walking a good bit everyday and now i have lost all of that weight except for a little bitty belly on me and i am working on that now and whenever i was walking all the time i would be able to eat whatever iw anted to eat...

it is hard to walk around where i live, they do not clear the snow off the sidewalks so I would have to go to a track and walk. but that is an option and very impressive that you lost all that weight just by walking alone! Congrats

I enjoy most to walk. Its simple, the cheapest (you can save money while exercise your body, when you go to the near store or coffee shop) no need special shoes, you can do it without any instruments, all you need only walk... its good for control body movements since brain also working right and left side... from walk the right and left body portion will exercise your brain function also. The best for my health i think is swimming, but i don't have time to go to swimming pool, so i prefer walking.

I would like to try water fitness, it seems like it would be fun. My only concern with walking is that I am unable to do so outside. If I were to walk outside I would be walking down the middle of the road because the side walks are covered in snow. This is incredibly unsafe. To walk I would have to use a track and pay a fee to be able to use the track.
