What kind of eating utensils are used at your kids schools?

I was in the lunchroom yesterday helping out at breakfast and I saw a little girl struggling to eat pancakes for breakfast because our local schools do not allow our kids to use knives. Our schools only use plastic forks and spoons to begin with. I had a real problem with this. I wanted to ask why don't they serve the mini pancakes instead but didn't want to cause any problems. I understand taking the knives out because of problems that have occurred across the country but it was pitiful watching a 5 year old trying to eat a pancake the size of a mcDonalds hamburger.

Hi Kim, When I went to school, we had silver forks and spoons, but NO knives. I think that the schools don't think that far ahead with how are these kids suppose to eat these things without a fork. lol I think maybe the little girl if there wasn't a lot of syrup should have tried to eat the pancake with her fingers. Or maybe she could have held the pancake down with her fingers and cut it. Maybe the school could have given out two forks one for holding down while cutting with the other one. I would find the cook and make a suggestion about the mini pancakes, you can make them if you have pancake batter. lol

WOW when I went to school it wasn't all frozen. lol We actually had a cook that cooked and not heated :) I get what you are saying about the pancakes though and the girls parents probably never thought to teach her the dip technique. Come to think of it I don't think I would have thought to teach my kid that either. lol Anyway, when I went to school, we had silver, but we did not have knives, so it is almost the same today, just the utensils can be thrown away now. Saves on them washing dishes now. I use to go in the kitchen when I was in 8th grade and help as that is what we did in 8th grade and I use to have to take the dishes out the dishwasher and put them away, after drying them. lol

Sandra, I know you can buy mini pancakes because I do for the girls. The schools only heat up the food they don't cook it from batter. 90% of the food comes in frozen and then they just heat it up or defrost it. The little girl could have rolled up the pancake and dipped into the syrup but by the time I saw her she had already poured the syrup on the pancake. I had real silverware going to school back in the 1970's but the world has changed. Most of the time the food and nutrition department does a pretty good job about planning the food so it is easy for the kids to eat.

I was voluteering at my daughter sachool on Thursday and I notice that they do teach the kids how to use plastic knives especially because of what they we're having for lunch. But they are strictly supervised when doing it. My daughters school was serving them salisbury steak and the kids was having a problem eating it and was tryingto use they're spoon to cut the steak. But the teacher and I help them by using the knives(plastic) and once they're finish cutting they're food we took the knives for them.

That's great that they were able to use a knife, supervision is good. But sometimes in the schools that I am in there are at least 8 - 10 classes at anytime in the cafeteria so it would be really hard to supervise everyone. It was good that you were there so you could help out.

The schools have gone way over board. My grandson is in high school and they have those sporks to eat with. what real damage can a plastic knife do? A pencil is much more dangerous and they are allowed in the schools. A pencil is sharp too. A plastic knife has no sharp edges. Sometimes the schools have no common sense.

The only scissor that were allowed at school are those that have blunt ends. They are only sharp enough to cut paper and sometimes aren't even any good for that.

Oh, I agree with you. Are scissors next?

I think if i remember right our school uses thoes plastic sporks... now try eating with those! oh i guess I lied... those they dont' use anymore... they only get spoons and forks also.. heck my opinion... a fork is more dangerous than one of those knives. It is sad... can you help her?

I could have helped her if I would have caught her in time but by the time I saw her she had already poured the syrup on the pancake. I would have suggested rolling it and dipping it into the syrup.

One idea was that they could at least allow knifes that are as sharp/dull as butter knifes. C'mon their are alot more ways peope can kill eachother and what says that banning knifes will stop them from bringing their own. Also, its not nice to force a little girl to eat a damn pankake with a plastic spoon, would have been nice if someone could have cutten the pankake to sn small enought pieces. If you can have a plastic spoon, why not a plastic knife, the whole thing is retarded.

Oh, I agree - I really think our board of education has gone off the deep end on this one, especially with kids under the age of 10

Schools have gone overboard on a lot of things. The school systems have way too much authority and time on their hands. The educational system in this country is a joke anyway, and most of the people running it don't have enough common sense to find their butts with both hands. School officials try to cure the headaches by cutting off the heads. The high school where my step-daughter attends is the world's worst. They don't want the kids coming to school sick, and if the kids are at school and start to cough a little or something, parents have to go pick them up. Yet when you let the kid stay home because they are sick, the school officials ask you all kinds of questions about it, and they even have an automatic system that calls your house about 6 pm with a recording that your kid wasn't at school today, and if you don't answer the phone and listen to the entire message, it keeps dialing your number until you do. The schools systems suck and they need to be overhauled.

Our school just started the automated system for absences. I think it is good especially for highschool kids because there are a lot that do cut school. I always make a joke of it when it calls our house, and look at the kids and say "What you didn't go to school today?" They are like MOM, you knew we were home.
