Do you keep cards on hand?

Today we are getting a surprise visit from my sister in law & family...we had dodged our nephew's birthday party because we were so sick...he is 12 years old now...now I am scrambling to get a birthday card for him... I have a few on hand, but they are what I consider to be "old lady cards" or otherwise inappropriate for a 12 year old boy. I would make him one, but they are the kind of people that only generic store bought crap will do, and even that is not good enough. I think I will have to break down & make one on the computer, which I hate doing because even though I have card stock & the professional tools to make a really nice one, people think it's a cop-out. I'd kind of like to give them no presents for anything because no matter what it is it's not good enough & they don't appreciate it. Trying to do Christmas with these guys is a nightmare! At any rate, my stock of cards is very low...I have a $10 gift certificate at rite-aid, i think i will use it to stock up on cards...it really helps out when everyone does everything the last minute all the time & you don't have the time to go to the store... All of this of course makes me really wonder about the practice of giving cards in the first place...i only like hand made or home made cards that mean something - the store bought sentiments rarely say what I want them to say or make me feel like someone really cares. What about you? Do you stock up on cards for unexpected occasions or buy them far in advance of needing them? Or do you scramble at the last minute looking for the right card at the store?

I don't think it's a cop-out to make a card on the computer, I think it's a special added treat, to me it would mean something special! ON cards, price never enters my mind, its the thought that counts!

I made him a card that I will blatantly admit I stole from a card I saw in a store, lol. It said "Jason, it's your birthday again? Geez! Weren't you old enough last year?" He laughed at it & thought it was funny. I'd still like to get some cards for my stockpile!

I have a card holder that is organized by the moths. It is severely lacking at this point and I need to do a little shopping for it, hehe.

I have seen various organizers - I think I am going to make one for "birthdays", "graduations", etc. etc. I am down to my last 2 "old lady" cards, so its time for me too!

I have a few that I keep in my desk but for the most part I am one of those ppl that are in the store on the day before the event hunting for the one right card that I know is there somewhere. I'm even so bad as to buy Christmas cards and then never even get them opened much less mailed out. I probably have 2-3 brand new boxes of Christmas cards around here. Ackkkk, we have a whole banker's sized box of cards. Whenever we travel we look at them in hotel gift shops or other places and pick up a few as mementos of each trip, but we buy more than is humanly possible to ever send. However, when a card is needed, it is fun to be able to do two things at once, find a perfect card for each occasion, and remember all the fun we had picking them out.

What a great way to collect keepsakes from traveling! The good news is cards are flat - so hopefully it is not as cumbersome as say a spoon or rock collection!
