How to carry sharp objects

my friend and I had a disagreement about the proper way to carry sharp objects - such as scissors and knives.
I said you carry the scissors with the blades in your closed hand - the handle pointing up.... she said the same only with the handle pointed down and the point end up.
She tried to explain to me that it is safer when you fall and reach your hand out to catch yourself - that the handle is down and the point is up, but I just could not envision this.
Which way were you taught to carry scissors as a child?
do you still carry them that way?

I thought there is only one considerate way to carry scissors.
"Wrap" the pair of scissors with your fingers so that it is "tucked" into your palm.
This way, you cushion the sharp edges and will not risk hurting anyone. And before you close the scissors and squeeze it tight, you won't hurt yourself too.

If the point is up and you would fall down, isn't there a chance that you would hurt yourself? I carry scissors with a closed hand on the pointed parts. The points would be facing backwards, so that when I hand them over to someone, he or she could easily grasp the handle that would be facing him or her. As for knives, I hold it in front of me with my thumb and forefinger at the tip.

I was always taught as a child to always always when holding scissors have the blades pointing downwards never up because if you trip the blade will go towards your face! always hold the middle part of the scissors in the palm of your hand with the blades downwards that is the safest. Never ever have the point end up, that is wrong and dangerous.

never ever thought of it before but I would say handle in hand, blade sticking out but not up, I would imagine if you fell and it was sticking up you would stab yourself.

I have always always always carried blade down. There is no way on this planet that carrying something with the blade up is safer. I just can't figure that out for the life of me why people would think that is safer! LOL

We teach our kids at our schools to carry them with the points down.
I just held a pair in my hand (both ways) and her way is not safer because if you fall and put your hand out to stop yourself your face could hit the blades. If you carry them with points down and fall the blades would fall away from your face.

Hi Modestah. I'm with you here. I was taught by my father that you have to carry sharp objects with the point down and the handle up. I don't remember the explanation but I think unless you could hurt someone in front of you by accident if he comes closely.

Blade in closed hand, handle pointing up. That is how I was taught.

I was always told as a child to make sure when I carry scissors or anything with a sharp blade, to have the blade pointed towards the floor and the non sharp handle pointed towards the ceiling. That way if you fall the point doesn't stab you in the face also if you hold the scissors outward towards the direction your walking of course someone could easily be running and get hurt.
