Packing for moving

moving boxes - Moving boxes
United States

A couple of times when I moved I labeled each box in the upper right hand corner with what room it belonged in. Unpacking was a breeze! We just got all of our things out of storage and I know I barely labeled any of the boxes at all and then it was with maybe one label slapped haphazardly somewhere on the box...ugh! What a headache that is going to be. I knew when I was doing it, I would hate myself, but I just ran out of time. What do you do to make packing and moving easier and more organized for yourself?

I used different color duck tape for different rooms but i'm pretty sure i lost some boxes because every once in awhile i'll think of a bunch of things i didnt throw away but cant find even after i was all unpacked..

That is a good idea with the color duct tape. Just how is it we lose things when we pack it in a box, put it in the truck, then put it in the new house...? Thank you for responding.

I also write on the box, using a black sharpie, in huge, really noticeable letters, what room it goes in in the house. Packing and unpacking is a huge pain. When the hubby and I moved from our townhouse to our house it took me a month and a half to pack everything and I will still putting crap in boxes the day we moved. Then, on moving day, I think it was around 9pm and I was in my closet unpacking some clothes while the hubby made the last run to the apartment to get the last few items and make sure everything was out of there. I felt a little sleepy so, I just laid down on the floor in my closet to shut my eyes for a moment and catch a second wind. About 20 minutes later, the hubby called to tell me he was on his way back home. His call woke me up. I literally fell asleep on the floor in my closet while unpacking. You are never truly home until your fall asleep in a random place in your house while unpacking! LOL!

I always find myself still packing on moving day...no matter how far in advance I begin. Yes, that is tired to fall asleep on the closet floor...lol. Thank you for responding.

My husband and I moved into our current appartment 4yrs ago and I was so glad I marked every box we packed. It made it so much easier when we moved in to just place it in that room and then go through it then. When it comes to moving I prefer to be organised that way the move itself goes smoothly and the unpacking goes even smoother.

It certainly does go smoother. I think I will unpack boxes out in the garage (that is where everything is stacked) and take it right to where it belongs in the house. Or right in the van to go to the thrift store. Whichever. lol. Thank you for responding.

Ahh moving! i hate it. i hate moved a lot and what i found was marking each box with what was in it. i would mark it with dish set or pans or angels and it all went very smooth. now we just got the rest of our stuff from storage and it was a mess. but like you i did it in a hurry. my hubby joined the army and was in training when i decided to move to oklahoma where he was training and i had a week to get everything done so i pretty much just put things in what ever box they would fit in. hopefully i never have to do that again.

That would be very tedious while packing...but I imagine unpacking would be extremely easy. Thank you for your response.

When I was younger we moved a lot. Even all the way from the east coast to the west and back again. I hated moving so much, changing schools etc. But we did the same thing just wrote on the box where it went to and then when we got there we just put it that room. A lot of stuff never even would get unpacked. If I were to move now I think Id do it how youre doing now.

I have moved still packed boxes once or twice. I did not move around as a kid, but I did attend school with Air Force kids and it was hard to have them coming and going all the time. I still remember some of them from grade school even and wonder what they're doing now. Thank you for responding.

My easiest move was when the places were less than an hour drive apart and I had a couple of weeks overlapping time to be in them. I know this is rarely the case, but if I can make that happen next time I move, I'll do it the same way again. We set aside a few things we would need until the move was done (think like if you were camping or something). Each day we'd pack a few boxes or load the cars with things and take them from one place to the other and unpack them. We had a lot of work to do in the new place, so we had to make a many trips there anyhow. By the time it was officially Moving Day, there were only a few large things like beds and appliances to move. We hired those done and when they got there the place was pretty much ready for us. You wouldn't have guessed that we'd just moved.

Since I grew up moving about every 3 months it's a breeze for me. I pack each room together and label the box with which room it goes too. Then when their all moved, I just unpack them in the room they belong in. I also mark the ones that are simply storage stuff so that they don't have to be unpacked but just re-stored. Marking each box with the room does make it much easier. The last time we moved I simply marked the boxes Storage or House...that way I knew which ones were to be stored and which ones were household things. It was still a huge chore but it made it a little easier. ~~AT PEACE WITHIN~~ **STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS**

I would label the boxes in the same position as well. Thats a great idea. For storage things that I knew I would not be using for a while and they were going to a storage place or the basement, it would be a good idea to use colored totes, such as red for Christmas stuff, orange for Halloween, etc. Just my idea!

I have those color coded totes, too! :) It makes it so easy to find the right holiday stuff at the right time. Thank you for your response.
