I want to make a simple tote bag, but every patern I've come across says I need 'webbing'. What is webbing? Here is an excerpt from the article I'm talking about. You will need: 2 - 20" pieces of 1" wide webbing. The length of the straps may be varied to meet your needs or desires. Carefully use a lighter or candle to gently melt and fuse the raw edges of nylon webbing to prevent it from unraveling. If you are using cotton webbing, zig zag or turn under the edges of the webbing when you are attaching it to the bag.

I think what they are talking about here is something on the order of Wonder Under, that is, fusible webbing, only cut into strips and applied for the purpose of giving a bit of body to the bag in places where you don't want the fabric to buckle or unravel. It is the same kind of thing we iron to the bottom of a piece of cloth we are going to machine embroider to make it more workable. There it is indispensable, and I would certainly follow the directions and use it on the bag, too. Here is a chart that shows different kinds of webbing and their applications: http://www.stitchemup.com/cornucopia/fusible_web.htm Here is another link to entertain you if you like that one: http://www.warmcompany.com/saspage.html
