The name Pug is believed to be derived from this dog's resemblance to pug monkey.

LOL...I had no idea. MY pug is a little black pug. She is adorable to me but I have had others say that she is so ugly she is cute. When she smells anything she has to put her whole fact on it and sometimes u can even feel her eyes on ur leg if she is smelling ur leg...LOL

HAHAHAHA!!!!! That's hilarious! You can feel her eyes on your leg.. haha the poor little thing. I don't have a pug myself but I plan to get one in the future when I am living in a house that allows me to have pets. I absolutely love them. They are beautiful. What's her name?

In my dog book entitled 'Dog' it says this about pugs; 'The pug is often said to take its name from the Latin pugnus which means 'fist'-suggesting that the dog's profile resembles a clenched fist. An alternative theory for the name 'pug' is that the word was used in England to refer to pets in general, but to pet monkeys in particular!' It also says that today in Latin countries they prefer to call pugs 'carlin'. I love pugs. When I get a pug I will love it like a baby!

This was said to be the possible origin of the reason the pug was given that name. This toy breed is characteristic for its furrowed face and small body. The origin of its name is under great debate but most people agree that it may come from the Latin, meaning fist. If you look at the dog with that connotation in mind you may associate the meaning to the face he has, it may be said to look like a closed fist.
