Teen Pregnancy To the young mother, pregnancy can be a health risk. A young woman is usually not ready for childbirth until she is at least 18 years old. Yet approximately 15 million young women ages 15 to 19 give birth every year, accounting for more than 10% of all babies born worldwide. Pregnancy is much more dangerous for teens - four times riskier than for 25 to 29 year olds. For girls ages 10 to 14, maternal mortality rates maybe five times higher than for women in their early twenties, and their children are also more likely to fall sick or die in infancy. Biological and socio-economic factors, including physical immaturity, poverty, lack of education and lack of access to appropriate medical care, increase an adolescent’s risk of pregnancy-related complications. Adequate pre-natal care and nutrition are of particular importance for young mothers. Very often, young pregnant women face severe social problems. Many girls find themselves mothers on their own without responsible fathers for their child. Women who become mothers during their teens generally end up with less education and fewer job opportunities. This, in turn, exposes them to greater risk of poverty. In a minority of cases, this may also work the other way around: getting pregnant and being supported by a man can be a survival mechanism for a poor, uneducated woman. The infant of a teen mother faces greater risks than a child born to a mother in her twenties. The child is more likely to be hurt during delivery or to have low birth weight. In addition, when pregnancy has adversely impacted the mnother’s life opportunities, the child is more likely to suffer from poor nutrition, as well as late physical and cognitive development. These setbacks can lead to the child having learning problems when compared to peers.

i have three daugthers and they are 15, 14, and 12. yes i am scared because the rate of teenage pregnancy is so high. i also have nieces who got pregnant as early as 15. now one of my cousin is texting me for her daugther just sleeps and let them watch the baby. it was a total headache and a disaster. i just hope and pray that my children will get married or pregnant in a good time not as early as 15 or 16 and not as late as 35 lol. i just hope they enjoy life like a normal teen should do.

I am with you on that! I don't have kids yet but I do have a 13 year old sister. You are right... Let your children enjoy life like a normal teen should.

Hi dolce,I don't know how they come up with their statistics, they sure as heck did not ask me of my child bearig experience..lol,on the contrary I have three children, first one born when I was just seventeen and a half, the birth was my easiest labour around four hours. She weighed eight pounds two ounces, was healthy and beautiful.Second child I was twenty,he was a very hard labour, actually felt I would die giving birth..lol,came in at nine and three quarter pounds phew!Third I was twenty three, again a not so bad birth weighed eight and a half pound. All my children did more then well at school, are all very bright and intelligent.I have had friends whom have given birth though over thirty, the child in one case My husbands daughter six weeks premature, and has just at seventeen months began to walk, must say she is a very bright and intelligent child, just wishes to take her own good time. They don't add for me these statistics, perhaps to-days children have changed?

I guess those are some of the consequences for not waiting. It can be almost deadly. Oh well, this should serve a lesson to many young people to wait until at least they are over the age of 18 and married. -Feel Free to Disagree

There are more and more girls now getting pregnant at a very young age. It is alarming and I believe that parents should always remind their children about the disadvantages of getting pregnant or having someone impregnated at a very young age. Even schools have to be able to give such guidance.
