So I've been trying to eat healthier and save some money on groceries, so I've been cooking lots of dry beans - lentils, split peas, back beans, pintos, etc. It seems that most of the recipes I have are soup recipes, but we're getting tired of the same dishes. Can you help inspire me? What's your favorite recipe for dry beans?

I love beans and eat them almost every day. Here's a good reference for healthy bean recipes: http://www.fatfree.com/recipes/beans/ You can actually take many regular meat recipes and just replace the meat with beans or lentils. I like to make bean dips by pureeing with olive oil, garlic, s&p, cumin and oregano. I like to make chili with a couple types of beans. I like to make bean burritos. Sometimes I just prepare bean dip, spread it on tortillas and top with a little salsa. I like to throw beans into my leaf salad or make bean salads: http://www.calbeans.com/2-Baby%20Limas%20with%20Tomato%20and%20Basil.html Bean burgers are yummy too: * 1/2 onion, diced * 2 c cooked black beans * 1/2 cup flour or oats * 2 slices bread, crumbled * 1 tsp garlic salt * 1 tsp onion powder * pepper to taste * oil for frying Saute the onions till soft, about 3-5 minutes. In a large bowl, mash the beans until almost smooth. Add sauteed onions and the rest of the ingredients, except the oil, adding the flour or oats a few tablespoons at a time to combine well. Let sit for a few minutes. Mixture will be thick. Form bean mixture into patties, and fry in a small amount of oil until slightly firm.

I forgot to add that I mix in enough water to make it a bit pasty and often throw in some ground flax seed to help bind it. Sorry. Glad it was tasty though :)

I just want you to know that I made these yesterday. They were very tasty, but had a hard time keeping them from falling apart when I was cooking them. Any suggestions? Also - thank you EVERYONE for the recipes!

My favorite way is to cook pinto beans with ham. Put about a tablespoon of sugar in them while they cook, then add ham or a hambone and cook until tender. Add salt last, as it toughens them. Serve with corn bread or cornpone and spinach.

Cornpone is kind of like cornbread but without the flour and eggs. There's a recipe for it here (scroll down) http://www.cooksrecipes.com/bread/corn-pone-recipe.html

You can take the northern, black, red or garbanzo ( Chick peas) mush them up good add some mayo and any thing you like to make a sandwich spread. I like to add onions, olives to the mix then spread them on a variety of bread that has been toasted add lettuce and tomato

We usually cookied red beans or white northern beans. My mother in law is Italian...so she likes her beans with pastina or orzo. It taste so good and very simple to make. Buy the ones in can and usually they sell for 3/1 something like that. Anyways....put the beans in a microwable dish, season it with onion and garlic powder, a pinch of salt and olive oil. Cover it with saran but poke holes on top. More or less 15-20 minutes will cooked the beans. Cooked some orzo or pastina (small pasta, usually stars). Combine the beans with the pasta. Served it with parmesan cheese on top. Delicious and very filling and also very cheap.

Ooooh that sounds VERY TASTY! So are the beans you're talking about canned or dry? I understood they were canned, but then you said you cook them in the microwave for 15-20 minutes, so now I'm confused! Thanks for the clarification!

I am sorry for that...but I find the canned one easier to use and faster. You can use the dry ones too...red beans, lentils, etc and do the same thing...mix it with those little pastina and top it with parmesan cheese. Really, really good.

Hi, We make lots of recipies using dry beans. Soak them overnight and pressure cook it. Drain the water and you could saute it with green chillies salt and grated coconut. You could also sprout them and eat them half baked as salads.

Are you talking about a can of green chilis? That sounds like a nice/interesting mix with the coconut. (I just bought some too!)
