Ok while looking for topics to blog about for my legalize marijuana blog (http://420-now.blogspot.com) I cam across this hilarious letter sent to some members of NORML from Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin in response to a letter sent asking why marijuana was still illegal, the complete text can be found here http://wonkette.com/363265/senator-tom-harkin-marijuana-makes-people-sell-their-children but this is the line I think is just down right silly:
"The victims of the drug war are many - the small child whose parents are so addicted to illegal drugs that they sell everything including perhaps their own children to obtain a fix..."
Ok what now? man whatever he is smoking I want some.
Here's another good one:
"Marijuana is often the drug singled out for legalization. However, marijuana is not the recreational drug that many believe it to be. In a study completed by the Drug Abuse Warning Network, the number of marijuana related emergencies has nearly reached the level of cocaine related emergencies. As this statistic indicates, marijuana use often has fatal consequences."
Ok this study does not show that marijuana has fatal consequences at all, just that some marijuana users end up in the hospital, it doesn't even go into if the injuries were minor cuts and scrapes, fatal, or just psychological. A while ago the news was abuzz about a narcotics officer who called 911 thinking he was dying of a marijuana officer, the officer was not dying, he was not even ill, he was just tripping out and paranoid, he went to the hospital but nothing was wrong with him, this counts as a marijuana related emergency visit. Nor does the study acknowledge that cocaine use if falling, as such it does not necessarily follow that marijuana related emergencies has risen, but it could well be that cocaine related incidents fell to the rate of marijuana ones.
