Welfare Moochers

Does it bother you when you hear about people spending their social security checks on video games or their food stamps to buy 24 cases of carbonated beverages and chips- when they have young children who need nutritious foods? It irritates me to no end to watch people be completely lazy and mooch off the government, or MY tax dollars. There is a difference between people who genuinely need it, who are working and trying to make it on their own and people who in a sense 'steal' the money. What do you think?

With stores like Aldi's and Save a Lot people are able to spend less and buy junk food. As long as they are buying healthy food also, I have no problem with it. I *worked* for my Social Security check. It is by no means a hand out from the government. What I do have a problem with is people who trade their Food Stamps for services (babysitting) or paper goods (toilet paper, paper towels, diapers, etc). I have seen this done and it does bother me. Good discussion.

Because of those stupid rules... They may not be able to get these needs another way... What do they do... will you help them get these things, so they can purchase more food? See it now from another point of view, Glad to here that...

I don't care what people do with their social security checks, as I do not see that as welfare. On the other hand, abuse of food stamps makes me absolutely furious.

Here in Oregon if you want to buy energy drinks they won't let you pay for them with Food Stamps. I think they won't even let you buy those energy bars either, I'm not sure about that one. But I guess too many people where buying that kinda stuff so they put a stop to it. I have tried the energy drinks and I think they taste bad and the bars are yucky. I'm on food stamps and I buy healthy food for my kid an myself, sometimes I buy sweets but it's usually ingredients for baking a cake or something or cookies.

Too many times I have stood in line behind people at the check out and watched them load the counter down with candy, cases of coke, potato chips, ice cream, and very few groceries, and then get out their food stamp card. In my opinion, if you are on food stamps, you buy food with them, not junk food. You are not alloted anything to buy toliet paper, or washing powder, something that you must have to survive, but you can buy all the junk food you want, something doesn't seem right with this system. But then I have also seen people with food stamps, lay packages of steaks, crab legs, shrimp up on the counter, and i'm thinking look at me I have to eat hamburger and chicken while the ones on food stamps get to eat steak.

I totally understand what you mean I have seen the very same thing, a lot of the time it's young folks doing it the older one's know better lol they have learned as well as myself that those food stamps have to last ALL month long. I think in order to get food stamps the state welfare office should put them through a class on meal planning and how to spend them and what NOT to spend them on. I think pretty soon one who is on food stamps won't be able to buy junk food they need to set it up that way so that the children can start eating healthier. If one wanted to buy junk they can use their job money to do so at least there would be more good food in the house than junk.

Okay yes it would make me mad if i see them going grochery shopping and more junk is bought then normal food when there going grochery shopping though. you can tell wether there going grochery shopping or just spot refilling.(refilling things youve run out of). If a child doesnt have the right food or as much food as need and your out buying pop and potato chips i would be veary upset BUT who are we to judge them? we are nobody. how do we know what they do and do not have in their house? are you telepathic? didnt think so:)Thats how i look at it.

i get 275 a month in food stamps and it is not enough to feed 3 people on cause it is like $10 a day for for 3 people since when can 3 people live off $10 a day ? can you live off $10 a day nope did not think so so quit judging others unless you have lived in there shoes

Actually I can live on $10 a day. Like I said it's all about money management and what you buy with your money. Welfare is fine for deserving people and people who actually try to work, like I have said numerous times, I am not against that. I am against people who do nothing and get free stuff for it.

It's not about being telepahtic or judgemental. It's about what they willingly tell you when they are buying things. I worked at a grocery store and saw what people bought. It was not just "spot filling" they would come through the line and be like "We haven't bought food in two weeks because the stupid food stamps ran out, they only give us $250 every 2 weeks and we have 3 people." Then they fill the counter up with potato chips, carbonated beverages, candy etc. nothing of any nutritional value and tell the kid to behave or he wont get chips as his lunch tomorrow. It could be a lack of money management skills because $250 every 2 weeks would be plenty to feed a family of 3 if you knew how to manage it. A lot of it may be lack of education, but most people who do not have an education can still work at fast food restaurants to try and provide some type of income.

Just a minute. how I spend my social security check is my own business not anyone elses. we earned that money so we can spend it anyway we see fit it is not welfare at all. I worked for years for that. and rarely well you find a person on social security who has children for heavens sakes. If you are talking about p eople on welfare thats another story and yes I dislike it when I see people squandering money on stuff like videos when they should be buying food. but I will buy videos or pop or food and its none of your business I earned that money and I am eighty one and not able to work any longer.and people on social security seldom have food stamps either. you confuse social security with welfare. Social security is money taken out of our pay checks over the time that we worked and we earned that so do not ever accuse usof mooching off of anyone. we earned that money. I am angry because you do people on social security an injustice get your facts straight cherbear. your tax dollars do not go for my social security my tax dollars probably did but not yours.

I am not talking about older people who have a right to have this benefit as it is rarely given out to people who need it. But in fact those who are in their 20's talking about how they will use their SSI check - as someone above me mentioned. These people do have children, do not work and are being rewarded for it.

Just to make myself more clear, when you pay social security taxes it is not like $7 from your paycheck goes into your folder for when you are older. It is like a big pot and everyone's ss money is delegated out amongst the rest of the people who are using it.

I agree with you. But let me tell you what bothers me the most: Although it might sound racist but I'm hispanic so coming from me it won't matter. Illegal women who take welfare, they say that they are single and they have like 3-4 kids. They get WIC, Welfare, Food Stamps and they get money to pay half their rent. The husband is just there on the side making money and since food is cover, rent all what they earn is for their luxury. New cars going out. This is what hate and let's not forget free health services. When I was pregnant and i went to see if I could get free health services, they asked for my SS# and a check stub. Later my application was denied and had to pay for insurance. I was working part-time and could barely work because of the vommitting. I couldn't get any free services and I pay my taxes.

They do help them here in California. They do. They get every service possible. I don't know how it works in other states but right here they do. And because of the fact that they don't a SS# it's easier for them to work and no one tracks them down.

No it does not bother me what people spend thier money on as when i see so many fighting machines that cost billions of dollars just to kill humans. It makes me sick to the stomach of such a waste when there are people starving in this world.

Point taken. Here in UK the government are constantly checking and finding people in the gym working out and doing marathons even though they state that the have a bad back or can hardly walk a few paces. So I am in agreement with your discussion.

This response is slightly off topic and could start an entirely new debate. It apparently does bother you what people spend their money on, just not with food stamps or government help. If you are so adiment about feeding people then do so! My discussion however is about people who abuse welfare - which I guess technically is not their money, but mine and every other tax payer's in the united states who are supporting lazy people. As I have said NUMEROUS times, I am not against all people having wellfare, some people do genuinely need it, I am against those who abuse the system.

The most important thing to remember is that such people are rare. Most people who get benefits actually need them. I working very hard and trying to get off of benefits, but I still need them for now and I will always need them for medical insurance due to my disability.

If you manage to start a termanitation squad to hunt these people down let me direct you to my lazy %^& ex wife as your first target. She's perfectly capable of working ( after 14 yrs of goverment paid college she should be more than ready for a career )yet doesn't. Meanwhile I slave my butt off just to get the things she gets handed to her... Enough said otherwise I'm just going to start swearing. I remember working at a grocery. Ladies would come in, pay with WIC & Food stamps & drive off in a brand new Lexus or something, WTF?

There is more than one reason that people receive social security money. SSD is for people who are disabled. Social security retirement is money a person earned after paying into the system all of their working lives. These people should be allowed to do what they want with their money. You must be thinking of SSI which is money given to people who are not working or making enough. That money should have restrictions on what it can be spent on.

I earned my social security after many many years of work and what and how I spend it is nobodys business I do not have a wholelot to spend and mostly goes for food.If someone somehow got social security at a young age for some reason thats a whold different ball game but I am still teed off as I do not want anyone looking over my shoulder tallying up whatever I am spending and saying I used your blasted tax dollars as I did not. I earned my way at eighty one I have the right god given to spendas I see fit. I do not look over your shoulder to see if you are spending your paycheck wisely.

I agree with you on that one. If all the people in this world, will do thigs proper (the right way)and not try to take advantage of others we will be in a nearly perfect life. Unfortunately like you said, they rather waste their money on movies instead of buying what they really need.

I generally try not to worry about what people do with the money that they receive whether they need it or not, but when people go into a GameStore and blurt out that they are using their social security check to buy video games. Then 10 days later come back to return the item saying they need food for their family then getting angry when the associate working tells them they can't get the full price for the item since it's used. I also think that illegal immigrants shouldn't be granted health care or welfare because they don't deserve it, they are too lazy to even go get the papers signed to live here. I am not racist, I worked with a large Mexican community and love people, but think that they need to go through the proper channels in order to obtain such help that should be available to only Legal residents.

It would bother me if I knew they did this type of thing ALL the time. But every once in a great while would not bother me so much. Say they were responsible 95% of the time. I had a friend on welfare and she had to work hard to get out from under it. The government does not make it easy to do. If she opened a saving account they'd take her welfare checks awaay from her. And it could have been a savings account for only $1! She was eventually able to get out - but it was extremely difficult. The reason why it wouldn't bother me if they were responsible most of the time is because it's nearly impossible to be perfect all the time. Now, if the person was always selfish and didn't care about their family - then yes that would bother me. Welfare or not.

Where I live there are loads of women who live like their rich on social security, one woman I know has 5 children, 4 different fathers, she is getting a four bedroomed house that she wont have to pay a penny on, she gets everything paid for and gets money every week from social security too. She is always loaded, she has wardrobes full of brand name clothes and can afford anything she wants. My husband works full time, we have 4 kids and we havent a penny to our name, everything we want has to be budgeted for or saved for, tell me how thats fair. She has told people that she has the children to claim the money and that if she went to work she would be worse off. There are people in this world who genuinly need that help at certain times of their lives but they get off their backsides and try to get off it by getting little part time jobs, but its ridiculous what some people get for doing nothing.

Now this is what makes me mad I have seen people and known people like the one you talk about they just flaunt it all over the place. I also know people who can't get the benefits who REALLY need them because of some stupid rule that the welfare office has come up with. It just makes me so mad.

There is a difference between people who need assistance and those who are abusing the assistance they get. If someone is trying and cannot afford to live that is good enough for me. If they are lazy and doing nothing and get the assistance then I don't agree with it.
