Is catnip is good for cats? What is your opinion!!

Catnip....good or bad? - catnip
United States

I've heard and read so many pros and cons about catnip that I thought I would see what some of the experienced cat people here thought about it. My Bigguy just lays around all day and I can't get him to play or do anything at all (except that I found out he plays with balls at night...lol). Some people have told me to get catnip and others are dead set against it! How do I know who to listen to? I don't know much about it but can it hurt him if I get some? Are there brands that are better than others? Are there different ways to give it to him? I value your advice here!

The catnip will not hurt your kitty. We give it to ours all the time. They love to roll in it and eat it. When we had our last two kitties they would even fight over it if we didn't put it in 2 different places. We sprinkled it around the scratching post. You can get it in toys too. this will encourage them to play with the toys. I personally don't think that it matters what brand as long as the brand doesn't have a lot of other fillers.

Thanks for the advice. Yours is the first one I've read and I'm interested in seeing what others have to say.

Catnip will not hurt cats they love it I have heard that if you give cats catnip that they won't chase mice though. I don't know if that is true or if it is just a folk tale. My mother in law gives her kitties catnip all the time and they are happy and healthy.

I don't have any mice so that's not an issue for me. I just want the poor guy to have some fun in his life!

I read in my cat book that there is a gene in cats that determines whether they react to catnip or not. If they have that gene, they love catnip and will play, if that gene is not there, they have no interest in the nip. Have you heard that before? We grow our own catnip in the spring and summer and the cats absolutely love it like that.

My cat loves catnip and I see no problem with it. He's healthy and he loves it. However, there are cats that don't like it. I don't know why you wouldn't give it to him. I'd say try some catnip. I like the dry stuff better than the fresh catnip plant. only cause the plant doesn't last long and reggie cat didn't like it as much. But I say go for it. It's not bad.

I get this brand called SmartyKat - It's 100% certified Organic, safe, pure and potent.
There's nothing at all wrong with giving your cat catnip. I've been giving mine catnip for years because they love it. It makes them high so to speak and they get all giddy, happy, relaxed and more playful. They're so much fun to watch. I just filled a mouth with velcro on the bottom with fresh catnip and Music, Daisy, Rascal had a good ole time with it. lol The grabbed a hold of it and just rubbed their faces all over it to get it good and wet so the scent would come through stronger. And I'll put it on their scratch pad that has the ball that goes around and around and they get all gooey with it too. There's nothing wrong with it at all. In fact, catnip is a plant which is grown wildly and cats can get it from being outside. It's a natural thing for them to like it. They'll even eat some of it too and no it does not hurt them one bit. So go ahead and get some for Bigguy, you'll be glad you did HE'LL be glad you did!!

I used to give my cat(s) catnip. But only every once in a while. Each of them would get a good bit of exercise.Like things for us, everything in moderation.I would suggest giving it to them early in the day to avoid lack of sleep. lol

I have never read anything about catnip being bad for cats. I am sure if you give them too much it can be bad. We give our cats catnip all the time. In the spring we give them fresh catnip. They love that 1,000 times better than the dried stuff. I think since they actually eat the fresh stuff, they get a better high off of it LOL

I have never heard that catnip is not okay for cats. If in doubt, make a phone call to your vet & ask if they sell catnip[. If they do, you can be assured that it is okay for cats. My mother gave me these plants, a type of grass, to transplant into my garden. We dont the correct name for them, but they grow into large grass plants, with a puffy ball type flower at the end. My cats, especially one of them, just loves these plants. She is constantly chewing the top off them. Hence, they are not growing well.

In our house catnip is a treat that the cats get during Christmas. Each cat gets a toy with catnip in it.They enjoy it.It is only once a year. I don't think it harms them.

All the cats I used to tame on the farm didn't care for cat nip. I bought my current cat a cat nip toy, he didn't seem interested. My friend gave me a toy for free with purchase of some teas she had. My cat went crazy over it. I asked what was up with that. My friend said her cat nip is fresh. So the fresher the catnip, the better. There are catnip sprays and cat nip flakes. Some people use cat nip to encourage good behavior while using water in a spray bottle to discourage bad behavior. Like scratch this post, but not the post on the wall. Some even use orange spray or cayenne spray on things to discouage cats from scratching some things. I like cat nip from plastic tubs instead of in toys that have been left out and open for a long time. Cat toys that make the cat work to get things are good. Cats are often nocturnal. They hunt mice who are mostly around at night. So playing at night and laying around during the day doesn't surprise me. TAke care and have fun with your Big Guy.

Some cat cannot smell catnip. If your cat responds to cat nip by getting a bit crazy you can remove it and your cat will calm down within about an hour. There are no real downsides to giving him or her nip. Try it when you are home and able to supervise, you can remove it at any time. You can place it in a piece of fabric and tie it, so that you have control of it. Other people who know how their cats react, sprinkle it on their cat scratching post or a piece of cloth that is only theirs or a toy. Don't over do for the first time. Use fresh catnip if you can, some gets very old and is worthless after a certain point. You do not have to use freshly picked but just do not use any that has been hanging around for years. Hope this helps.

My cat loved catnip and it never caused her any harm. I always bought mine from the herablists just to make sure it had no nasty chemicals on it. I used to just tip some on the carpet and she would roll and eat some of it. I don't know if there is any reason to give or not give it to a cat. I just did because I used it to get her to scratch her scratch post and she liked it so much, I kept getting it for her. Some cats don't like it, which I thought was strange but my aunt's cat never liked.

I havent had a cat for ages but I can say that my cats always loved to roll in the catnip plants weplanted in our garden and they seemed healthy enough no harm done. I would still have a cat but alas I live in an apt complex that does not allow any pets of any kind. Catsare my favorite pets as you do not own them they own you.

it is very good for them, especially indoor cats who don't have the opportunity to graze on grass. Plant material will help their digestive track in order and from what I have been told also helps older cats stay clear of bladder problems. If you have an indoor cat I suggest along with giving them regular nip you get a long low planter and get nip and catgrass seed to grow for them. They love it and it helps keep them healthy. It also makes their leavings in the cat box less pungent. You can get seed at any large pet supply store.

I am currently growing my first lot of catnip in pots. When the seeds are big enough I'll plant it in my garden and my two cats can have a good old time rolling around in it! I pulled a couple of leaves off and gave it to my little cat Nigel and he started rubbing his head up against my hand and he ate the catnip! It was funny to see him 'high'. At my last job I often sprayed catnip spray into the kennels of cats that were boarding there for a long time. They are so funny when it affects them! They rubbed themselves all over their blankets, it was so cute! However, some cats don't care for it. I agree-fresh is best and you can get catnip seeds anywhere flower/vegetable seeds are sold. Catnip is very easy to grow.
