Free things between Virginia Tech and Washington DC?

Hi! Me and some of my friends are going to go to Washington DC in May. We are driving there from Blacksburg, VA (aka Virginia Tech). I'm looking for suggestions for some really cheap (preferably free) things to do for people in their early 20s. We are going up for my friend's 21st birthday so I would like to know about museums, landmarks, bars, good places to take pictures, whatever. I'm trying to find places to stop on the way and things to do in DC itself. I would really like to find an outside dinosaur park if there is one, but I haven't been able to find one yet. Any suggestions?Thank you!
