When you don't have the money to buy books.. but love to read.

I joined a site that swaps books. I've been a member for a year. The concept is this: You post whatever books you're willing to part with. I think you get 3 credits for posting 10 books. Each credit can be used to get a book for yourself. If someone wants one of your books, they'll send a request in an email. You accept the request, print a wrapper on your computer, and mail the book. No hand addressing envelopes, their name and address prints out. You pay the postage to mail the book. When the other person gets it, they'll mark it received, you'll get a credit to get another book. When you want a book, click on request next to the book name, that person will accept your request and mail you the book, paying postage. It uses one of your credits and you pay nothing. I've been here for a year, saved 200.00, read most books whenever they came out, and if they havent come out yet or are not available, you just put it on your list and when someone does post it, an email will come to you letting you know you can have it. What a great concept. You pay less than 3 bucks to mail a book media mail. Most often I pay 1.59. I've cleared my bookshelves, I get new books all the time, and theres always going to be someone out there wanting a book that you have. Softcover, hardcover, research books, kids books, audio books.. everything! So, I'm throwing it out there, if its something you want to join, let me know, I'll get you the info. Any questions, let me know too.

I've heard of this before and I believe I have friends that are with this type of program as well. It sounds great, but I still prefer to use the local library. It doesn't cost me anything extra as I just stop in when I'm in town on errands, I don't make a special trip. I can see advantages to this, but my library fits my needs well.

Others prefer to go to the library, I'm always late returning my books or feel like I'm on a schedule to read what I checked out, so thats why I prefer swapping books. Plus if there is a book that I want to buy, I can get it through the site and keep it. Theres no requirement to send the books back. So thats what I like about it.

That's a good point! I hadn't thought about being able to keep the book. I'd definitely consider it if I had books that I wanted to add to my collection. As for returning to the library, that's not a problem for me. When I finish with a book, I put it by the door so it goes into the car on the next trip out. Even if we don't need another book, its simple enough to drop the book into the box outside. My library also sends out email reminders when a book is coming due, and I can renew the book on the internet as well.

I sent you a friend request. I would love to get the information about the book swap site. I easily spend 400-500 dollars a year on books. But I'm very bad about returning things. This place sounds perfect for me. Thanks.

But I think it may work only for citizens of a country. For international crowd to participate the cost of mailing will exceed the cost of the book. If this is not the problem I would really like to take part.

It sounds like a great idea, I wish I could be part of it too but unfortunately I live in the Dominican Republic and we don't have a mail service as such - incredibly in this day and age but yes it is true. They don't deliver to your house. Here in Punta Cana I have to have a PO Box (which is in Florida!!) everything gets sent there and then I have to pay for the cost of mailing it from Florida to Punta Cana. And that is VERY expensive - one envelope costs about $1 - as it is done by weight you can imagine how much it will cost me to have books sent over! It is such a pity because I absolutely ADORE reading. And although I don't mind re-reading books there are only so many times one can do this! I have a couple of neighbours who have the same problem and we swopping books but that's limited too! Can't wait until they get a book store here - library, I think that is a loooooong way off! Most of it will be in Spanish too (should be practising that more often)..
