I fell in love with this house the first time I looked at it but wondered why in the world anyone would put a sauna in the basement! It's very pretty, lovely wood inside and a 2-level wide bench to sit on. It has a handheld shower, too. The owners who installed the sauna were from Finland and taught at the local college so I guess they probably used it a lot. I use it for storing emergency supplies of water, dog food and everything else one would need for a disaster. I've never used the sauna for the purpose it was meant for but it's still nice to have in case I would want to. So do you have something unique in your house? Maybe a gorgeous tile backsplash in the kitchen or a great basement or fountains in your garden?

My home is earth sheltered. It's built into the side of the hill, so 3 sides are buried. Only one side is exposed and that is almost all windows. We can turn off the heat (in Minnesota) and the indoor temp will not drop below about 52 degrees. Even the garage, which is uninsulated doesn't drop below 45 degrees. That's even when the outdoor temps are sub-zero.

I've always wanted one of those! They make so much sense. I saw one once that not only had the wall of windows but skylights and the house was so bright and cheerful! They spent next to nothing on heating and cooling. I wonder why there aren't more houses like yours? It would save the nation (and the residents) billions in energy! Oh...the corporations wouldn't make as much money. Darn. Oh well, it was a good idea! :-)

I wish we had some skylights. This place can be kind of dark in the summer when all they trees are leafed out. It's actually brighter in the winter when the trees are bare and the light reflects in off the snow. Still, we do like it alot. We do need to heat it, we are in Minnesota after all, but it's great in the summer. Even on 100 degree days it stays nice and cool inside.
