My friend says some hackers can hack your computer just by displaying your screenshots of your desktop online. It made me think how could they get information about me using my desktop screenshots? Can you really extract some personal information out of it? Share your thoughts, it really bugs me. Thanks

I personally dont think that you can, i am pritty good on computers and networking. I dont think that there is a way, unless there is some detail on it, like ip address or something in more depth than that! I think that you are fairly safe! to take over your computer, they might be able to do it when you post a screen shot, because when you post the image, you ip and other information goes with it! but i dont think you have to worry! lol

Chris

I don't know if any information shared through screenshots/screencaptures can directly lead to a computer being hacked, but some people can be reckless with the amount of information that they choose to share. Taking a screencap of your desktop and sharing it on the net can show others a lot about what programs you use and potentially what sites you like to visit. I was participating in a thread on a forum one time where a very reputable member on the boards uploaded a screencap to illustrate a point. Some member joking highlighted the fact that he exposed his use of p0rn through the link displayed in the bookmark toolbar of his browser. Everyone in the thread got a chuckle and he was a little red faced, but if his boss or girlfriend had seen it, it might have turned out far worse for him.

There is nothing in a screenshot to supply important information relating to your computer. You can identify a selection of the programs installed by looking at the icons on the right hand side of the taskbar, but unless you have something opened on screen showing the IP address or the passwords etcetera then nobody is going to gain any valuable information.

I wouldn't worry too much. Even if it was possible noone would want to go through all that work because i' m sure it wouldn't be an easy task. There are plenty of computers out there that don't know how to secure themselves, so why would hackers give themselves extra work?
I know it is possible for people to insert viruses and personal information into a pictures coding, but in general. I seriously doubt any kind of personal information from you unless you know what you're doing would be/could be inserted into the picture.
