Salt mens if there is flavor in the salt only then its fit to eat.if it loses it saltiness then it is of no use.That means while we are on this earth we should preach the the gospel to many people as we can.Light perishes all darkness.Light means we should try to live a pure and holy life.

Its also a reminder to us as christians to be different from thw world and be a flavor to a tasteless world that we are in. We give hope to those who are in the darkness.

I'm not exactly sure of the way to be the Salt and Light of the world, but I guess the best we could do is to be an example in conduct and behavior, physically and spiritually, so that others who observe us will see the "Salt" and "Light" in us that they might be more curious to know why we behave the way we do. That's when it's a good time to share about Jesus and the Gospel.
PS: What I typed is just my opinion, and might not be entirely correct. Hope it somehow answers your question though! =)
