Does it really help to be rude when you dont agree?

I dont get it. In my life I have changed my views a few times on how I feel about people trying to help the environment. When I was in high school my friends and I had a group called HOPE ( Helping Our Planet Earth ). We focused on making it easier to recycle and things like that. When I was older I went on a trip to Moab Utah, and there were a lot of environmentalists there. I cant believe how rude and dishonest they were. If you didnt agree with them then you were and evil person and deserved damage to your car and so on. Jesus walked so they thought I should too. This was my first taste of people like this but it wasnt the last.
Does this really help the cause? I know how I feel about the planet and I know how I feel about a lot of groups trying to help it. Has anyone else run into things like this?

YES... there are some people in this world who feel the need to put others down, slander other people & as you said damage cars & so on simply because you dont agree. i put it down to a small narrow mind or maybe an underlying emotional problem, they simply can not expand the way they think to include other thoughts & idea's. even here on mylot you will find people like that..

I guess you will find people like that every where and it is up to us on how we handle the situation. I was surprised at the group that these people were standing for ( Well known group that I wont name, I hope they dont tell their followers to act like this) . I really should just forget it all and do what I feel is the right thing to do for me.
