Sorry Wrong Number!

Once my girlfriend had a phone number that was one number different from one of our hospitals, so she was frequently plagued with calls from people thinking it was the hospital. Once I had a mysterious large chain calling me, all the time, yet when I called them to complain they said they had no reason to call me and that I was mistaken. This was happening several times a day and I had to get my phone number changed to get it to stop. Another time a man called for someone else and I told him he had the wrong number. He seemed like a nice guy and asked if he could call me again, I was single and so I said yes. We talked for a while but when he asked to meet me I chickened out, and he never called me again. What are your wrong number stories?

I have had people argue with me that they indeed did not dial a wrong number. As in, Caller: Is Mary there? Me: No, I'm sorry! You must have a wrong number. Caller: Did I dial 123-456-7890? Me: Yes but, there is non one here by that name. Caller: I just spoke with her 10 minutes ago at this number. Me: I'm sorry! You must have misdialed because there is no one by that name here. Caller: I know there is because I just spoke with her there. Me: Sir, I can assure you, this is a small company of only 3 people. I am the only female here and my name is not Mary. There is no Mary here. The other two people that I work with are both men and aren't married to anyone named Mary, or do they have any children named Mary. There is literally no one at this office that can be named Mary unless you spoke with the magical speaking spider who hasn't told me her name. Perhaps she is the Mary you are speaking of. In that case, I haven't seen her in a little while and I think my boss might have stepped on her a couple minutes ago. So, I guess I should say, I am sorry for your loss. He finally hung up! It seems like almost every wrong number that calls me, either argues with me that they could not possibly have made the very human mistake of dialing a wrong digit or they get ticked off that they dialed the wrong number and slam the phone down. Are you ever rude to anyone who tells you that you dialed the wrong number?

This happens frequently at my house about every 3 days someone has called a wrong number asking ofr someone else. It irritates my husband though especially if it happens in the middle of the night which it has several times in the 2 years I have had my phone. My brother recently had his number changed and they gave him a recycled number from a garage that fixed cars that recently went out of business, so he was getting a few calls from people wanting to know about fixing their car and other stuff. He was warned though that it would happen. I was also. They are alot of numbers that have the same last 4 digits that I do and all close by and I often get calls for people I know. So I end up giving them their correct phone number. You played it safe you had only talked to this person you didn't know him or how he was. He could have been a nut or something.

Hi Rose, My old telephone number was one digit different from a nearby school, St. Theresa's College. You could imagine my phone ringing endlessly all weekdays. It got to a point where the caller was just saying "St.," then my mouth will automatically said wrong number. It took me about a year and a half before I requested for a change of my telephone number.

A few years ago my doctor had refered me to a renal doctor and gave me the number so I could call for an appointment. But everytime I rang that number I got Bills Auto repair shop. well that was not going to work so I had to call my doctor's office up and ask the nurse for the correct phone number for Dr.Iiquia. it was almost like the other number except the last digit was four instead of five. Sometimes people are not careful eitherwhen they leave phone numbers on my message machine. I got one numeber for my diabetes nurse practioner and dialed it and got a mortuary. fine so I called up my doctors office nurse to get the correct number and it was off by two digits. the mortuary people told me that they got calls from people wanting to make an appointment with the diabetes nurse practioner all the time.

We've recently moved and have a new number but a very friendly old lady calls here all the time. She doesn't ask for whomever she is calling she just starts talking, she will start with hey, its me what have you been doing all day and she would probably go on for hours if I didn't interrupt her and ask who she was wanting to talk to. I've heard about her granddaughter (I'm assuming its her granddaughter) going to go ahead and do a pageant because her mother was insistenting and as much as her stomach had been hurting all day, and that she probably just needed to use the bathroom. This happens ALL the time and I try to stop her as soon as I realize it is her calling but she is extremely talkative and possibly hard of hearing too, because I will try to interrupt her but she'll just keep on going. I don't want to hang up on her because she is an elderly woman and I think its rude to hang up on someone. Oh well, maybe she knows shes called the wrong number and shes lonely and needs someone to talk to.

I know what you mean!! When we first moved here about 4 yrs ago, this lady named Johanne Lemieux had the same number as we did apparently, cuz once the school called to ask why her son Jonathan was absent that day, and once, a detective left a msg on my answering machine about this complaint I (Johanne) had left him!! I was like..huh...what? And at the video store, when i gave my phone number to access the account me and hubby share, they told me, are Johanne and David still on your account? I was like , ok, who are those ppl?? And ever since we live here, many people, a few times a week say when i pick up the phone: Huh, is this Future Shop? Like, heck no! Apparently on their website our number is listed as one of their stores!!

One time we had a new dept. store that was given a phone number which was one number away from ours. We kept getting phone calls for them, we did not answer our phone with the business name which is the way they always answer their phone so that should have given them a clue. Anyway, they would ask for the mens dept., toys, women's dept., elect., auto parts, you name it they ask for it. One time my son answered and the person told them to hold a minute and hung up. I called the phone company, they said they never give a business number so close to a home number. hahaha They were going to charge me to change my phone number but I kept on and they didn't charge me. As far as I was concerned they should have give the business a new number and not me that had to change my number.

good for you for getting your number changed with no charge to you. That is the least the phone company could have done.

One time a guy called my parents house on New Year's Eve and said "Happy New Year's Jean" Jean is my mom's name. The guy also had the same name of someone she new. But as they chatted they found out they didn't know each other. That was funny. A similar story was when a lady called for Joe to tell him that the softball game was switching parks. My husband's name is Joe and he was a softball coach. After talking further with the lady, we realized she meant a different Joe. There was an incident where I called a wrong number and the lady on the other end kept talking as if she knew me. (she sounded very elderly) "Oh that's all right dear , I haven't talked to you in ages. So how are you?" That was funny. An embarrassing one was when I accidentally called the veterinarian and asked how much they charge for a root canal. There was this really long silence on the other end. Then "We're a veterinarian's office." I still turned beet red even though she couldn't see me.

Our home number is one digit different from the local cinema. We are always getting people calling to find out what's on. Usually I am helpful and give them the right number, they apologize and of they go. But occasionally I have been know to say that yes, this is the cinema and we have Gone with the Wind and Brief Encounter showing. When they go "Eh"? I say that I am sorry but we are a small town and don't get the latest releases. However, we are up to 1946 now. My aunt once had a woman call her from Australia. She asked to speak to a certain lady and my aunt explained that she knew no one of that name. "But have I got the UK?" asked the woman. "Oh yes" replied my aunt. "Well I'll talk to you instead, shame to waste the money".

I really can not think of too many wrong number stories for my phone, other than a few guys would always call my phone asking for some other guy. It use to be his cell phone number, but had it changed. Now, my brother on the other hand has only had his cell phone for about 6 months now. He always complaines about all these places that call him telling him to pay them the money he owes or they will take legal action. Hes even had a guy call him tellin him to give him the money he owes him or he'd be sorry. I guess the person who had the phone number before him had gotten into a lot of trouble with some people and owed them a lot of money. Not to mention all of the loans and stuff the guy must have taken out. Anytime someone calls him saying they want their money he just tells them the truth and says "hey I'm only 17, I'm not old enough to even get a loan without a co-signer. the guy you are looking for must have changed his number sorry." Now, my brother might have to have his cell phone number changed because these places keep calling him and are running up his phone bill.

What country are you guys in? If you're in the USA, you can politely tell these people that under no certain circumstances are they ever to call your number again, and if they do, they will be taken to court. There is a such thing as a Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Perhaps this site will help: http://www.fair-debt-collection.com

Actually, I have a family members number which is two numbers off from mine. People, within our family, will call and leave me messages as if they called her phone and vice versa. It's not too annoying since I don't answer my phone that much. But, i just wonder why they couldn't get the two numbers right, and when they hear our voices on the voicemail don't they get a clue that they called the wrong number? I have called numbers by mistake where people are like you have the wrong number, you're looking for such and such a business, and they proceed to give me the correct number ... it's like I called an answering service or directory assistance.

Growing up our phone number ended in double zeroes so we got lots of wrong numbers. Mostly they were for a hotel. When we moved to New Jersey a couple of years ago people would constantly call for the man who used to have our number. We would even have doctor appointment messages for him on our voicemail.

I don't have any good wrong number stories like yours, but ya know chickening out might've been the best thing you ever did in your life! He might've been a genuinely nice guy. On the other hand, we'll never know :D I've had my number for about 5 years now. I'm still getting calls for a woman who previously had the number and when I took my car to Pep Boys and the computer matched her name with my phone # I was flabbergasted. That woman really gets around! LOL
