Janina San Miguel, the 17-year old contestant from University of the East, grabbed the crown in the recently concluded Bb. Pilipinas 2008 pageant. She answered the question of the judge like a tragic disaster. Many are even commenting why she won the title given her poor English skills in answering the judge's query. It was all a big mistake for the judges after all in letting her win. What's your take on this?

Well being in front of thousand of spectator and also in front of judges may make her presence of mind be deluded with lots of insecurity. It is pretty much acceptable perhaps to the judges of her reactions towards them that is why they allowed to have her to be the grand winner. As Melanie Marquez even commented for as long as you deliver yourself in other areas very good there is always a chance for her to win and luckiy it did happen to her and to Janina. I think we should not question it anymore instead support her that she can make it through the international competition.

She still has a chance to polish her grammar. She could take up speech lessons as sugested by Ms. Melanie Marquez, she just have to do her part. Most Filipino household don't speak English at home. But for me this is not an excuse, grammar is the very first thing that you should learn to be able to express yourself.

I think she needs to improve on her english, grammar, and pronunciation. She is really beautiful - no doubt about it. But Everyone else has the right to criticize her for not being able to answer correctly and for reasoning out her age. The fact that she joined the contest, she should have know the pressures, there is always a first time for everybody. but her reason is not an excuse. She went to the battle unarmed. That's her mistake. She won, she has a chance, once again to prove her detractors wrong, now she has to be able to improve months from now. Good luck on her.

She has all the physical features of a beauty queen that's what made her grabbed the crown. With regards to her English grammar, i think that should be considered. She should be given a chance to redeem herself and prove herself that she is worthy of the crown.

It's quite hard to express oneself inv front of many people especially when you are not using your own language- remember English is only our second language. I think the judges saw a potential in her, it's just sad that her fellow Filipinos are the first in line criticizing her when in fact we all know that her English skills is something that she can improve on within 7 months before the Ms. World pageant, that's her biggest challenge. I also believe that it is not because she don't know how to answer it, she has an idea, it's just that she was lost for words or mentally block because she was nervous but is trying to manage it. (sana kasi tinagalog na lang nya!) Have you watch the video of Ms. Teen Usa South Carolina clips in YOUTUBE? That was something that is more embarrassing I guess, she failed to express her thoughts in a clear way even if her mother language is English already- that is as good as saying that she really doesn't know the topic asked to her.

She's pretty, yeah! But whattha! As far as I know, Philippines is known to be one of the best english speaking countries and not to mention the brilliance of Filipinos in anything is exceptional. (It's not that I'm biased but Filipinos are in demand around the world because of their skills and talents.) I think the contest is not a search for representatives but a search for the next Melanie Marquez(but in fairness to Miss Melanie, she has sense. Just bad english.lol) I really do think there's something wrong not only to the pageant but to our education. She's from UE right? I'm really thinking what went wrong... Maybe she's just nervous. lol

Yes I watched the pageant. She won 2 other minor prizes earlier so I agree that she got high scores in the other criteria . But let us not lose hope. Melanie Marquez was in the same situation. Hope she will be able to polish her English before the competition so she will have a better chance of winning.

I was really shocked when she won the crown. Who would have thought? When I was watching the question and answer portion and heard her reply, I already thought Oh no, goodbye. I was rooting for her because she's the prettiest of the bunch. But we all know that intelligence is a big factor and criteria. Maybe she scored very high in other areas that when they computed for her average, these positive brought this one negative up. Hmmm, I don't know. But she sure can't answer like that in the international pagaent. Maybe she should just speak in Filipino and get an interpreter. But the whole world knows that English is one of the primary languages here in the Philippines. Then they'll wonder why she can't speak in English.

I think there was a mistake but not that huge.. She is gorgeous yes but something is lacking.. Coz beauty is based on beauty itself and the knowledge she possess and thats what you call beauty. Maybe a mistake but the crown is with her already. On the other hand, imagine Melanie Marquez.. she have a poor grammar before but she is there she made it on top..
