Would you buy a house where a mass murder took place?

I don't mean buying it while there is still blood on the walls but after all traces of the horror took place were gone. We had this horrible tragedy happen in this city last year where a man killed his wife, her parents and his young son, then himself. It was a horrible tragedy and now the house is up for sale. I said to hubby when I heard it was for sale that I would never buy the house. He asked why and to tell the truth I had no idea. I don't believe in ghosts or hauntings and the place has been cleaned up and painted so why not buy it? Apart from the million dollar price tag! Would you buy a house where something tragic had happened? If price were no object that is...

Its funny how when I read this my first thought was no way I wouldnt buy it, its just the thought I think, the tradgedy, because how can there be any happiness in the house with that history as its last memory. Im not sure if I believe in ghosts or not but I think a house can trap emotions from the past. I lived in pubs all my childhood and one of them was fine but upstairs just used to make me feel scared and intimidated. I have lived in 3 houses of my own, the first house didnt want me in it when I first moved in and I felt that very clearly, but then after a while it suddenly changed and became very welcoming, the second house was very welcoming when I moved in and I felt instantly at home. The house I am in now has always given me the feeling it doesnt want us here either, it never feels welcoming or like a home and yet its a beautiful house! I always say that I love the house but it doesnt love me! So I cant imagine what that house would make you feel like if you chose to buy it, not very nice I wouldnt have thought.

I lived in a house like that once and I just couldn't explain it but I never felt right living in that house.

I never felt comfortable in the bedroom of this house and to avoid it I spent countless nights on the couch. I never really thought about why I did while I lived there but the bedroom was just not comfortable...

Yes its a strange feeling isnt it? I remember when I first got the keys and I popped round to have a look with my son who was 3 at the time, we were about to go upstairs when we heard the loudest bang come from up there like a door slamming. It was such an angry slam, and I couldnt go upstairs, but I later figured out that it was the airing cupboard doors in the bathroom and there was no way that it was a draft or anything. It made the back of my neck stand on end and my son was crying he was really scared.

Interesting discussion. I'm not sure what I would do, especially if money was no object. I think I would lean toward not buying it. But like you I'm not sure why I wouldn't buy it. It just wouldn't feel right. To live in, eat in, sleep in, raise a family in a house that was the site of a mass murder just doesn't sit well with me.

I think it is just bad mojo maybe. I would feel a little odd in a place where such terror and sadness took place.

I don't think I could live in a house like that. Already knowing what happened would play games with my head. Plus you can clean all you want, you could still see blood with special lights. Would be good for Halloween I guess. I grew up in a house were I would see a old lady, and have doors slam in the middle of the night. I never knew who she was until one day I saw a picture at my neighbor's house. I found out that she killed herself on the property and had her wake in our living room. She picked a good time to show herself, at my 12th bday party. I think she didn't like for me to have friends over, because they left fast and never came back.

Even the house is all cleaned up, knowing that a mass murder happened there, I would not buy it. There are a lot of houses for sale all over so I would look for a house that has a happy history.

NO NO NO.I believe in spirits and ghosts and negative energy and bad vibes and horrible atmospheres. I could never buy a place where something awful had happened. I woldnt sleep in my bad at night.I lived in a house for ten years and i never felt totally safe in it.I never knew why though. Then my babysitter and my daughter seen a little girl sitting on the stairs at night. I saw her once on the edge of my bed.She did'nt scare any of us and to be honest we thought we had imagined her until we told eachg other years later. .it was only when we built our next house from scratch that i realised i had never felt comfortable in the first house.Even though it was in a built up area and there was lots of neighbours. Now i am in the country and i feel much safer.

Just knowing what happened with the last family that lived in it would make me hesitant to even have a realtor give me a tour. You don't have to believe in ghosts to feel the bad energy that has to be left within those walls.

It would make me pause too and if there were other houses for me to look at I would go for the other houses!

places like that (here anyways) they buldoze to the ground and either rebuild or make a park or whatever...i think that is the most humane thing to do in these cases.

I think this house will probably get bulldozed as it really is the view that is worth the money. I would love to see a memorial park on the land but I'm afraid developers in this city would never let it happen.

I was going to say, someone had already pointed this out, houses like this normally get bulldozed or something, but no i wouldnt, you wouldbt be able to sleep at night knowing what has happened in your room! Chris

I was saying that last night to hubby when we drove past that they will most likely knock it down and rebuild. The property and view are what is worth the money and I think even our city council would allow redevelopment on the site.
