Buddy has to have hip surgery

We have been taking care of my brothers dog, Buddy, for a lot longer than we were supposed to be. He dislocated his hip. Since it has been longer than 2-3 days since it happened he has to have surgery on his hip to fix the problem. After it first happened we thought that he was just not using his leg because it was sore from a fight with another dog. He only had a small puncture wound. That got cleaned up and we figured that once it healed up and didn't hurt he would start using his leg again. WRONG! He now needs surgery. My brother does not have the money to get it done. It is close to $400. I paid the $100 for his office visit and x-ray on the condition that my brother pay me back. Now he wants me to fork over $400 for his dog to have the surgery since I have it and he does not. I would be willing to do this if I knew he would pay me back, but he is notorious for not paying people back the money that he borrows. I am not sure if I can trust him to pay me back, but at the same time I do not want his dog (who is in my care) to suffer. What would you do? Have you had to have surgery done on a dog or any other pet before?

well i never had that problem before , but if you cant trust him to pay you back ,dont give it to him ,its his dog anyway and how about if he did not have you to get the money from ,what would he do then, its his responsibility to take care of his dog and other personal things so let him deal with it

This is truly a tough situation with your brother... but I would choose to save the dog's life regardless if my brother would pay for the expenses. I think, right now, it's the most important thing. Maybe you can also try to talk to your brother and see if you can work things out with the payment.

I understand what you're saying about worrying whether your brother will pay you back; $400 is a lot of money, to me it is, at least, and it's hard to come by these days and goes too fast for necessities. However, animal lover that I am, I'd probably have it done. I can't stand to see a dog suffer and it isn't his fault his master can't be trusted to repay his debts. So, my honest answer is, if I could afford it without making my family suffer I probably would pay for it and hope he comes through. If he didn't, I wouldn't hesitate to remind him and let it be known you're not going to continue being his personal banker. Annie
