Is it good mama hit her son?

Today when i finished the class i was waitting subway at the subway station where near by my school, i saw a mama scolded her son whom looks just 7 or 8 years old. the mama looks very angry, she scolded her son never-ending, but she looks still not satisfy. then she hitted her son. She hitted his shoulder even tweak his ear! however his son did't speak anything and cry, the boy just like a puppet. i know the mama wants her son become better, but is it useful to hit her son?
