Well I finally got a job! Which means acutal income and maybe my husband and I can get ahead for once. No more tons of money going out and none coming it. Now, I was wondering how many people here work through a temp service of some sort. Thats how I'm getting my job. Its a temp to hire job. So if I do a really good job and all that crap the place will hire me. I really dont like the idea of having to go to a temp service in order to find a job. Why cant companies just hire people themself? Is it because they dont want to have to pay the employees what they would normally have to pay them or is it b/c they dont wanna have to go through the whole 401K things and insurance stuff? What do you think about temp services and do you work through one or know someone who does?

Temp services take care of all the paperwork. They pay all the taxes and stuff, and send out the w-2's. It makes things easier if they decide not to hire you. That way the company doesn't have to fire you, and deal with unemployment and processing your w-2. The company just sends the temp agency a check until they find the employee they wish to hire. My husband did a temp-to-hire thing once many years ago. It worked out pretty well once he was hired on full time, but he hated working for the temp agency - just because he knew what they were being paid for his work (he got about 1/4).

the temp agency has to cover there costs. You will normally get a raise if you are hired on permently. Like if I had ended up with the job that I had when I was pregnant I was making 14.00 an hour I would have immediatly started at 16.00 an hour. They pay you what you should make or close to it.
You say he made 1/4 then are you saying when he got hired he went from making (example) 5. an hour to 20. an hour? I'm sure thats not the case. I'm sure he got a raise but not a 75% raise.

I know someone who it worked out great for too. They started at the temp service and the company hired them direct. So he went from making like 15 an hour to about 20. He really did like the job and worked there through the temp service for almost 4 years before they hired him full time. He is still working there and makes like 20 an hour. So it really did work out great for him.

Good luck with that:) I hope its something you enjoy. Ive never gone to work for one for myself I've been lucky to find actual jobs but hey if I was in need of a job that would be my last resort and yes I do think its so they can get out of paying benefits they hire temps. I heard the pay is higher though is that true?

Most of the time you dont get paid hardly anything through a temp service. The company pays them so much for you to work for them and then the temp service only gives you so much of that money and keeps the rest. So say I'm making we'll say 9 bucks an hour...then the temp service is getting acutally paid at least 12-13 bucks an hour. So in the end they are making like 3-4 bucks off of you working. That is just a rough estimate. But think of it that way.

I have worked for two temp agencies. Both were okay nothing to brag about but nothing to complain about either. I did not get my current perminate job through a temp agency.
The reason companies like to use a temp agencey is to see if the person will work out. If for some reason they don't like you or you can't "get" the job they can request some one else. You get placed some where else. Its kind of a live interview.
I worked at one job for 16 weeks I was told it was a temp to hire job. Then I got pregnant and the place I was working didn't like that so they requested some one else go there. I was sent some where else. The can legally do that because it was techanclly a temp job.
For the duration of my pregnancy I worked at a few different places and in my 8th month I told them I was done and would call them when I was ready to go back to work. Before I was actually ready to go back to work I heard about my current job - applied and got it. So I didn't go back to the temp place.
The place I am at now had a temp in here for 3 months in between the girl that was here for 6 years and myself. She didn't do the job well at all and they asked the temp agency not to send her back. Well that was after she didn't show up for a week.
Anyway you should be okay with the temp agency. You have to remember to turn every thing in on time so you get paid on time. Make sure you call them if you are taking a day off even if you call the place too. Make sure your time card is correct. Normally any problems come from the place you are working not the temp agency.
The place you are working pays a lot more then you are making. Like I was paid 10.00 an hour for a while but the place was paying 19.00 an hour for me. That covers the cost of insurance, workers comp, there fee and so on. You shouldn't know how much they are paying for you but because my job was to pay the bills I knew lol.
GOOD LUCK!

Yeah my husband worked at a temp place and they got him a job that paid about 11 an hour. They told him it would be about 40 hours a week for a few months. In reality it was 3 days a week 8 hours a day for 3 weeks. A lot of people were placed in there with him that were all temps and they all worked the same days, same hours and same amount of time. The factory just needed some extra help for a few weeks. I knew they paid the temp service so much for you to work for them, but you only got so much of it. Which is kewl b/c the temp services need a way to make money also if they want their service to be free to people who need jobs.

I haven't found work through a temp agency, but I have been interested in trying to find one. I have been hoping from one job to the next recently and finding a job that will cater to skills has been stressful.

I have worked through a temp service called Kelly services, and I have had 3 jobs with them, i was hired on with two but one of them i got laid off, anyways I don't like them only because they have no benefits so it would a bad thing to get hurt.
I think employers like temp services is because they can get a feel of the person and see if they are fit for the job they are doing. That way they don't have to do a ton of paperwork themselves to find out the person isn't right for that job. In a way it's a good deal for the employer just not really for the employee.
