Does anyone else have a spouse that does not read or write, and everything is left for you to do when it comes to paying bills, writing out check, money orders, or fighting the Social Security when they mess up his check, or any other disputes that may arise. It is very hard to be the only one in the family that has all the responsibility and then when you get some places on the phone trying to straighten out what is wrong they tell you oh this is not in your name so I can't talk to you. But whent hey get him on the phone he can't answer their questions. My husband like many where he comes from was yanked out of school at a very early age to work to help support the family, when I married him I tried to get him to let someone come in and help him learn to read again, but he said he was too old for that. i can not imagine going through life with out reading the newspaper or a good book, he is missing out on so much.

When it happens again, talking on the phone for your husband, just tell them that you are talking for him and have him come on the phone and he has to tell them that they are allowed to talk to you about the problem. As long as he gives them permission, they by law, have to talk to you about it. I know this from experience because I used to take care of an older couple and neither of them could talk to the company and so they said to put him on the phone and for him to tell them he is giving them permission to talk to me. I then found out from a lawyer friend of mine that it is the law for them to talk to me, as long as the person who is being talked about, gives their premission.

This was IRS I was talking to it works fine with anyone that is not government. I am getting a power of attorney so that I don't have to go through this anymore. IRS sent me a form for him to sign so that I can go on and file the paper work I need to. One of the reasons that they would not talk to me that day was they said on their master file, my name and social security number does not come up as his wife, well tell me who else he got as a wife and I will ship him to them. Let them fight the world for him for awhile. (just joking) some place let me talk some tells him they refuse to do business with anyone but him, after 20 minutes of them not being able to get the info they want then I ask now you ready to talk to me. It is quite a hassel sometimes and very frustrating too.

Although my husband has a good education and loves to read, for some reason he just hates to talk on the phone, so I know a bit of what you have to go through making phone calls for your husband. It is not like mine couldn't deal with the financial issues, he just chooses not to. He just prefers that I do it for him. If you husband can sign his name, you might consider having him put it on a Power of Attorney which gives you the authority to do all such transactions on his behalf. Then if there were some emergency you would be able to handle it without having to go through all that frustration.
I would say that there is no age that is "too old" to improve one's reading skills. It is understandable that he just doesn't want to, but what if something happened to you and you needed his help? I can really understand that it might be very humiliating to have to be taught basic skills at a mature age, but you know, people who have strokes often have to start all over again and many do it.
He probably won't make the effort, but you never know. It would be great if he did! Good luck.

no actually I do not know anyone who cannot read and right, I guess that is more common in small towns or rural areas rather than big cities.
I do all my own bill paying etc, and always did even when I was married.
But since I am a writing and very good at writing letters many people ask me to write letters for them and I do. I like to do that kind of thing anyhow.
