This is my new passion: the 19th century dances!!!

from the movie Il gattopardo (The leopard) - It is one of the most famous movies by Luchino Visconti and this is the scene where they dance an extraordinary waltz.

I am attending a new kind of dance classes. Actually, I am learning the dances they were used to dance during the 19th century: quadrilles, countrydances, waltzes, mazurkas, gallops and so on. It is wonderful. Now I am getting ready for my first Grand Ball. It is a social event in which we dress in 19th century customes and dance those marvellous dances. I am so excited: yesterday I had my first appointment with the tailor in order to prepare my own dress. It is just like the one you might see in Gone with the wind or in the famous Italian movie Il gattopardo. I have my crinoline, a wide wide gown, beatiful lace for the sleeves and flowers and ribbons...it is a fairy tale and it is happening for true. I can't wait until the 12nd of April. There is a gala dinner and then the Grand Ball and the even will take place in one of the most beautiful hotel of Rome: the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Via Veneto. Wish you could join us and dance!!

hi, i think its amazing that you took up this dance class... i wish we have that here in the philippines, or maybe i just didnt look that hard. but the types of dances ive seen available here are ballroom dances. which is great because i love to dance despite my 2 left feet hehehe. ive always loved movies like gone with the wind and loved dresses and dances in their time. i think its very grand and very elegant that it brings out the best in you as a person, too much fairy tales for me huh? hehehe. although all types of dances do bring out the best in you knowing the basic kinds of dances before moving on the newer kinds of dance is a really good foundation. i wonder why that type of dance is disappearing, it would be beneficial for everyone to at least know how to dance and be in a party even just for one night of elegance dont you think? so how was your dance?

oh thank you for taking the time to leave here a comment. As you see, nobody is interested in these dances or hardly somebody seeing the number of comments i had to this discussion. Anyway, I have just come back from a wonderful XIX century ball and it was a wonderful experience. I also loved wearing my ball dress for the first time. I think these dances are a part of our history and add something elegant to our figure...so I wish everybody would join us..

im glad you had a great time. yes not a lot of people can appreciate these kinds of dances now a days. the way people dance has totally evolved, which is totally good because it means were constantly changing and never stagnant but it would also be great if these types of dances would still be used once in a while to know that they arent 'dying' you might say

That sounded incrediable! I would love to learn the old dances all the way back to King Henry VIII! I love the style the flow and the romance that seemed to linger by a whisp of a touch to bring out these wonderful dances. Sure hope you had a wonderful night doing this!
