Autism used to be a stranged word that did not exist in my vocabulary. I did not know what Autism meant. As a parent the second time, many pediatrician brush your concerns away. I believe every parent is the best person to evaluate their own child. My daughter was very slowing in speaking, sitting up, crawling etc. All of her mile stones were behind, I requested Help and referrals to specialist and was told to wait because every child was different. Too bad doctors don't lose their license for trying to save the HMO money by refusing to supply me with the neccessary referrals to have her evaluate for development delays. I waited too long. So I urge all new parents and parents-to-be to look up autism. I don't know too much about MYLOT policy for posting links, but I read a few where it is against their policy. So if anyone is interested in reading further about Autism and how to work with the school system to gain free services that your child is entitled to anyway. Pls send me a message and add me to your friend's list. I be more than happy to help. I hope the federal government will soon require every pediatrician to screen all children for autism or at least refer them to a specialist for screening as part of a mandatory check up that takes place at 1 1/2 yrs old. If that did happen, I would have saved myself and my family 5 years of misery. My daughter just diagnosed at five yrs. It is a big wake up call for me. I regret not pushing sooner for help and I regret listening to doctors who should know better than to dismiss a concern parent. My marriage has pretty much gone down the drain, my teen son has started becoming a troubled child and resent being around his sister because she is horrible to be around. So for all parents who need more reading information on Autism pls send me a message and I shall forward you the website. I hope the Federal Government will require hospital to give out flyers to new parents at time of discharge from hospital to read. That way new parents are informed. Not many parents have the extra cash to subscribe to parenting magazine etc.

I'm sorry you've had such terrible experiences with getting a diagnosis and help for your daughter. Unfortunately, this happens all too often. Just remember: It's not too late for your daughter. There are treatments and services out there for her. Hopefully, the school is providing some help at school AND at home. (They're required to do both!) Good luck to you, and I really hope things get better for you and your family.

It is such a painful process. In the process of trying to work the school system, the HMO insurance. I concentrate all my spare time to sitting on the computer researching about things to educate myself. Then I lose time with my son and now he has turned into a trouble maker. It is horrible. How do parents of more than 3 teenagers do it anyway. I cannot even handle one teenager and a five year old.
