Yesterday, my dad told us to help ourselves to some hay, which was great. We got to talking about years ago - now Im almost 42, but I remember this. Where a bunch of neighbours would get together during haymaking, and help each other. THey would start on one farm, and work their way around to each othrs, building ricks of hay, where there were no sheds, and no balers. Then saving the turf. Nowadays it every man, woman and child for themselves and how much money is in it for them. Is there anywhere that this still happens? What would it take for people to start acting like a team again?

I agree, it's sad that you don't see much of this anymore. I suppose you might see more of it in communities that are still farming or raising animals, but in the rest of the world that has both parents working, there is no time for much else, and really no need for that particular type of thing. I know when we got bought hay and had to put it up in the rafters, it sure would have been nice to have help. There was no one else around us that lived that type of life, so we usually did it alone or with the help of one/two family members. I would gladly help the neighbors do things if I knew they needed it, whether I got help back or not. I would think most would reciprocate, though.

I know that Im in a farming community, but because we have goats, there was a big uproar, and I get the feeling that people are standing by watching and waiting for us to fail. We were desperate last year, and went on the radio posted flyers etc, looking for a farm to rent with sheds, 1 person came forward. Out of I don't know how many thousands in our area, but one person. Its an awful shame.

#true - but again - if we all helped each other, would we have more time for each other, being that work might be done faster?

not only are we busier than ever before but, no one wants to get involved with anyone else these days. think of how people would have survived the depression if it weren't for the charity of others? my aunt tells me that they had a big garden and shared with everyone in their neighbourhood, now people barely know their neighbours!
