Has Anyone Ever Experienced Not Being Able To Get To See A Doctor?

My daughter started with an earache on Saturday and took some painkillers, over the weekend she has got worse and as a child suffered with ear infections so felt she needed antibiotics, however as she is temporarily (but fairly) long term back here with me she has a doctor in another area. I rang yesterday to my doctor who also sees my son to ask if they could see her, they told me no way, too busy, I then rang around every surgery in town and the answer was no. Today her ear was worse and even though I knew she wasn't an emergency drove her to our local hospital and explained the situation, they were absolutely fantastic, and we were in and out within half an hour with a presciption for the antibiotics we needed. Well done to our local hospital. I put off until today as I really did not want to fill the waiting room with a non-emergency but had no choice. The hospital did in fact say that my doctors should have accepted her. I think this is disgusting. HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED ANYTHING SIMILAR AND WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS? Please share. Ellie :D

No never. That is outrageous. I would have been tempted to take her to the surgery and ask for an emergency appointment. Maybe we are exceptional, but our surgery will see us anytime between 8 and 5. I think that you did the right thing thing her to the hospital. Hope that she's on the mend now.

Hi yes it is outrageous. She is slepping now bless, but as a small child always suffered with ear infections and had grommetts also so I knew all she needed was to be checked to see if inner or outer ear infection and a course of antibiotics. They refused to see her as a temporary patient as my address isn't a permanent address and where she is registered too far away. The hospital were lovely though, they said that I shouldn't have been turned away at doctors. I apologised as she wasn't what you would class as an emergency and they said no problem will just check her and give presciption which I was also able to get whilst at hospital and we were on our way. I will probably write a letter to my GP complaining of this, because not every one gets sick in the town they live in usually do they? Crazy. Wow you are lucky to have a surgery like. I will also write to the hospital to thank them. Ellie :D

Funnily enough my own daughter is down with a raging fever now and has gone to bed. I think that you ought to let your surgery know how disappointed you are. Writing to the hospital is a lovely gesture, I suspect that A&E don't get too many letters thanking them. I hope that she has a peaceful night.

I have had this many times. But I do somewhat to a degree understand where the doctors are coming from. To see my family doctor it takes me about a month or more to get in to see her. I don't like this at all so I find myself going to walk in clinics alot because of this happening quite a bit. If it is more serious I have to go to the Emergency room which takes hours and hours to get through. The patients I don't have to sit and wait to see a doctor. It truly does suck the medical field turning people away like they do. I was at my boyfriends 2 hours from my doctor and I don't have a doctor out that way. I went in with an extreme case of ear infection. I was turned away that morning because there was no doctor on duty. You do have to realize that they don't keep a doctor on duty but on call because it being a small town. Anyway I came back awhile later when the doctor was to be in and got checked out. He told me I was lucky to come in when I did or I would have been deaf if I left it any longer. There were repocautions taken on the nurse sending me away. There are too few doctors to the patients in the world that is one problem that I see everywhere you go.

I myself know that I have to wait a month if I want to see my own doctor but I'm usually well again within that time period and don't bother, but they should allow extra slots for emergency situations and as two of our family are already registered there I'm sure they could have seen her somehow. I understand there are not enough general practice doctors and their time is precious but so is mine and on many an occasion I have been left waiting an extremley long time after an appointment time, someone on another discussion recently said that we should be them if they keep us waiting the same as they do us if we miss an appointment. Thank God that you were seen before you went deaf, how horrible for you. Thank you for sharing your experinces. Ellie :D

I totally agree with you. But at the same time we have to realize that there are so many patients with some problems worse than what we have. I know with my doctor she does over book and that is what the problem is with alot of doctors thats why they run so late on the waiting period for patients. I don't think its right at all but what are we going to do. We need more doctors. I understand that there are 2 family members already seeing this doctor but you also have to think of the other patients that these doctors have. How would they feel. If you don't have a family doctor you are basically up the creek without a paddle. We do have to think of the other patients as well.

you can complain to the government about that, it is not right, and he is supposed to see emergency cases, especially a child. What I mean by emergency is something that has to be attended to like that or it could get worse and you don't have an appointment.

I am going to write a letter of complaint to the doctors, but I am also going to write one praising the cheerfulness, understanding and quick treatment my daughter received at the hospital. Thank you for sharing you thoughts on this. Ellie :D

I don't wait anymore. Thankfully the kids are covered under good insurance so if the doctor is unavailable, I go to the Urgent Care. If that's not open I go to the Emergency Room. When your child is sick or in pain, you don't want to wait for someone to see them. As it is, going to Urgent Care or the ER, you sit and wait for hours anyway.

That is really bad, there was a time when children used to be a priority, and as soon as you phoned and said it was a child they would see you straight away no matter what. Ear infection is the worst type of pain ever, I only ever had it once and I was an adult and it was unbearable so gosh knows what it was like for your daughter. I have never had a problem getting in my doctors for an appointment, but as I said they do not prioritise children like they used too. But at least your daughter has the antibiotics, and they usually work pretty quick.

I will be writing a letter of complaint to my doctors, even considering changing surgeries, but she is sleeping now, my daughter isn't a small child she is a teenager but crying in pain from her ear and needing something more than a paikiller for the infection. I will also write to the hospital as they were so very good and understanding. Ellie :D

Thats terrible ellie!Alot of doctors have way too many patients these days. I would done the same thing going to the emgergency ward. Im glad she got the medicine she needed. I finally found the best family doctor and whenever I have a problem he takes me right away. But it took me my whole life to find a good one.LOL

Oh I had a lovely family doctor too but unfortunately moved areas and this one isn't very good at all but was only one I could get registered with (I wonder why eh!). Thanks for understanding, she is on the mend now, but the hospital were fantastic and I will be writing a letter to them thanking them. I will also write another to the doctor but not such a pleasant one. Ellie :D

I do feel for you with that situation and I hope her ear is better. Ear infections are miserable I know. I recently had where my one tooth had gone very bad. Now I had two molars that were broken and had been for a while but they didn't hurt so since money is tight I put them off. The one though started hurting. I figured it would stop so just used over the counter stuff to ease the pain. I woke up the one morning and couldn't breathe without it hurting let alone swallow anything, the pressure hurt the tooth. So I started calling. The one place I'd been too before, they couldn't see me for a week. Now I couldn't eat and could barely drink, there was no way I could wait a week. I had to call some more. I found one who saw me that day. I had to borrow money from my parents for it but I got in and they took care of both teeth. It just got me how the one didn't want to see me for so long. That really got me. I can understand maybe not that day but a week? That was just nuts.

I agree those are two pains that are almost impossible to ignore. Amazing how such little things can make you so miserable. Glad to hear she's doing better. Ear pain isn't anything to mess with since it can cause long lasting effects. Sometimes all we can do is go to the ER and hope they understand why.

I have indeed experienced a situation like that! When I first arrived in California, I needed to find a pediatrician for my son, and I could not get accepted anywhere! Seems there was a lot of new people in town and a shortage of doctors accepting new patients! I finally asked one of the receptionists at the last place that was recommended to me, "How does anybody find a doctor in this town?" That was a big clue to the doctor and his staff that I was new in town, not just another local looking to switch doctors, so we were accepted since it was an unusual circumstance! A few years later, I had to find a doctor for me, and I had to go to four or five doctors before finding one that was right for me! I know of a lot of people who have had to go to the emergency room because they did not have a doctor or could not get an appointment! Drop-in clinics are good, but not always available.

hi ellie-that must of been an awful experience for your daughter thanfully your hospital has helped her' i can't say that i have had any experience of that kind but do knoww where i live is expanding very quickly and our doctors surgery are now having to refer new patients of our village to other drs further afield-the one thing that i do remember though is my sister came over and she had an awful accident but when i rang my drs they sent someone out asap who had to admit her to hospital-so they were brilliant-its such a shame to hear how badly your daughter was treated i hope she is feeling better-your friend littleowl

Oh thank you Littleowl she is much better now thanks. I have had a week of it believe me, but well on the mend now, I can't believe that in this day and age they can just turn you away like they do. I really didn't want to encroach on the hospitals time and did apologise before she had been seen but they were so good and I will be writing a letter of complaint to the doctors and one of praise to the hospital. Hey Ellie, im so sorry about your daughter. earinfections are the worst! hope she feels better soon. usually if i have some sory of infection i got to immediate care instead of a doctor. its alot faster and easier. in january i was having this problem with my skin, it burned and was peeling off. but i couldn't get in to see a specialist for 4 weeks. and by the time i got to finally see the doctor, my skin was back to normal. it was just horrable!

Thats ridiculous, I often don't bother because by the time you get to see a doctor you are well again. Glad your skin sorted by itself. She a bit better this morning. Thanks for sharing. Ellie :D

Ellie I have not experienced anything like that before and I think it is awful that they would not see the Child and to leave her with the Pain Earache is one of the worse Pains you can have and I would say that it is an Emergency specially if a Doctor or Nurse will not see her The Pain alone can cause a lot of stress and anxiety how can they justify not seeing the Girl I am glad that the Hospital saw to her and sorted her out

When I suffered from a retinal detachment in my eye, my mom and i went to the emergency room to find out what was wrong. We waited 7 hours to get in to see a doctor, and we were bascially told nothing could be done about it. After seeing a REAL doctor the next day, we learned just how bad time is in that kind of situation.
