how do you define tomato? is it a kind of vegetable or fruit? is there any rule which figures out it? form my viewpoint,i regard it as a vegetable, coz compared to those fruits such as apple, banana, etc,i seldom have it without cooking. what's your opinion and the your reason.

Well, all of them are fruits of the plants that they came from. But, to distinguish fruits and vegetables, fruits can be easily be eaten, some, you just need to peel while others, you just have to wash and they are good to go. Vegetables on the other hand don't taste good raw but, they do when they are cooked with other ingredients. Some root crops also taste good raw while others, need to be cooked as well.

Oh yeah, forgot to answer.. Tomatoes are fruits. Haven't you heard of sweet tomatoes? How about sweet potatoes? But really, some tomatoes are sweet big plump ones.

One time, I was alone at home and I really didn't know how to cook food yet so, when I checked on our frig, I saw some tomatoes and that helped me through the day until my folks came back with more food that can be easily be eaten

sounds reasonable, from the raw taste part, tomato is likely a kind of fruit, coz i often eat it after washing without peeling.what's more, the taste is good as i see.

A tomato is defined as a fruit, but I've no idea why. Like most people though, I tend to view it as a vegetable as it's normally served as part of a savoury dish. I'm a big fan of eating fresh sun warmed tomatoes straight from the vine though. There is nothing nicer, particularly the little cherry varieties.

oh,i envy you,coz i never saw the tomato vine, say nothing of to eat it directly from the vine. in my family, tomato is universally used in cooking, while when i was in university,i used to eat the raw one directly.it also tastes good.

are seeds the key to measure whether it's a fruit or vegetable?

Well, scientifically speaking it is a fruit because it has seeds. So are cucumbers, beans, etc. But, in a quick search to make sure I was remembering that science lesson corectly (it was a very long time ago!) I found a neat site that explains it well. I found this quite amusing...They also say that apparently the Supreme Court had nothing better to do back in the 1800's (my words, not theirs) and they ruled that legally, the tomato is a vegetable. (and we thought frivolous rulings and the waste of tax dollars were new things!) Anyway, you can read the info here, and they have the link to the court case info. If you are that interested in reading about it...lol http://www.howstuffworks.com/question143.htm

I think we can define tomato both vegetable and fruit. Because we can use them in cooking ,at the same time, we can eat them raw just like other fruits. I love eating tomatos raw, they are delicious.

Even if I know that tomatoes are actually fruits without doubt, I usually see them as vegetables. Like you, I use tomatoes in cooking and only eat slices of cut tomotoes in salads. Not really taste nice eating them raw, isn't it?

Of course vegetable.aswe all know, except cooking people seldom have it on other ways.On the face ot itmostof usregard it as vegetables but don't forget one fact.Tomato can be edible firsthand and it's nutrition is much more good than it's being cooked. So on some meaning of it I also think it can be regarded as fruits such as apple etc. Those all are my opinion about it.

It is technically a fruit, but I have always thought that tomatoes seem more like vegetables to me! I have a hard time thinking of them as fruit since they don't really taste fruity to me, and they are usually used with vegetables, like in salads.

I don't have to know the answer. I just love it and eat it a lot, such as with sugar and being cooked in the soup or with eggs.

I feel it is just a conditioning of the mind.We are brought up with a mindset of what constitutes fruit and vegetable. So for me as I am part of the majority I consider Tomato to be a vegetable.Although I do eat it raw and with Salads,I consider it a vegetable because mostly it is cooked and eaten.

The question you asked is quite difficult for me to answer. If I must choose one ,I would like to choose it was a vegetable.Because in such a long time ,people concern the tomato as vegetable. But science the little tomato appeared, many people consider it as fruit.People usually eat them with sugar but without cooking them.In one word ,my opinion is that the tamato is vegetable.

Tomato is a kind of vegetable due to the nutrition ingredient it includes. But I like eating raw tomatoes, not cooked ones. I can't believe that many people here don't like raw ones. They taste very good and please have a try.
