Which free anti-virus software is the best?

Singapore

Recently, I searched the internet to download a free anti-virus software. I discovered 3 good anti-virus softwares as follows: 1) avast! 4 Home Edition 2) AVG Free Edition 3) AVIRA Have you used the above softwares before or are currently using them? Which one do you think is the best free anti-virus software for PC? If you are using the Apple Macintosh version, please let me know the best one too. I will appreciate if you can also provide the website link to download the best anti-virus software. Thanks for your responses and help.

Avast is also pretty good..Ive used it, found it better than AVG. I am currently using PC-Cillin Internet Security 2006 which is doing a really neat job. Much better than Norton which eats all your system memory

I believe Avast has some firewall type feaures as well. It blocks your system from accessing websites with malicious codes, or websites that could harm your computer. AVG is basically just for cleaning up your system in case of infection...or scanning a file you downloaded from the net to prevent an outbreak of trojan/virus/malware

Yes, I agree with you that Norton takes up a lot of system memory. Others had also said so in the earlier responses. In what way is Avast better than AVG ?

Dear Wealth, First I was using AVG anti virus at home It was working satisfactorily. I had to send my hard disc for upgrading. They put in Mcafee at that time instead of AVG. At Office we are using AVG only and we do not have any problem at all till now. Both are good. I do not know about the other two anti virus you have mentioned. I have seen in the net but have not used it till now. AVG is available free at www.grisoft.com. You can use it. I had just installed the same for a friend of mine a few days back. So go ahead and install it. It is good.

McAfee is working well for me atpresent. I don't know for how long they have paid. You can see in this site, there are some free upgrades and downloads,. See if it is of any use to you. McAfee I think you can only free trial versions that too for a month. http://download.mcafee.com/updates/dldat.asp AVG you can get free. All the best

I had used AVG its good but then went back to using Norton, though it sucks in terms of resources. Next time , I am going for Mc Afee. I do have AVG older version still there on my com but its not installed now. As I remember I did get some kind of virus back then which was not getting detected by it so ultimately went back to Norton. It was two years back when I installed it so don't rmember which virus was it. Since then my moto is better go for a paid good version then ride a free ticket.

I use AVG 7 , which is paid. However, if you only want to use free, then go for AVG 6.

Thanks, Jenny, for your response. Is AVG 6 compatible with Windows Vista or the earlier versions of Windows Operating System (e.g. Windows XP, Windows ME etc.) or all versions ?

AVG 6 (they just call it the free versoion now) is compatible with all old versions, as I used it then. I am fairly sure it is comptaible with vista too. It will say on the site anyway. Go to www.grisoft.com

I think there is no free anti virus. Maybe you can get it by asking someone to share it with you.I am using kaspersky and AVG Free Edition. This 2 anti virus will help a lot to fight against various trojan virus in my computer. And help a lot to secure all my important files in my computer.

I personally use AVG and that is the one I recommend. It has served me adequately for many years. I compared avast and avg before and I like avg better. Haven't heard of avira.

I'm using AVG Free and Avast 4 Home. I'll try AVIRA so that I will find out if its good. I think its hard to determine which one among the FREE anti-virus is the best. You may have the best, but if that anti-virus of yours has an out dated virus database then it will not detect new viruses. The best anti-virus is the one with up-to-date virus database!

Hope you will let me know which is the best after you had tried AVIRA. For me, I am looking for the best in terms of user-friendly, does not take up too much memory, useful features, no conflicts with other installed softwares, up-to-date virus database, efficiency and effectiveness in removing all viruses.

Based on my experience, Avira AntiVir Personal Classic Edition is a quite good antivirus compared to the aforementioned two antivirus above. It does its job pretty well which includes detecting and deleting viruses and other malware, provided if you update this regularly. Currently, I am using a paid version antivirus, which is Eset Nod32. It monitors your internet activity which increases your defense against this malware threat. It also blocks unwanted drive-by downloads. As such, I like the overall performance of this antivirus (NOD32). :-)

Well those three are good ones, but when you use free anti-virus software are you really getting full function or are you getting what they allow you to have. I have been in the computer field for 19 years and what is free is not always best.

There is always a price to pay for getting the best. However, if one is not willing to pay, or thinks that software is too expensive or cannot afford, then fortunately the internet can help by offering free versions although they might not be the best. If the free versions can do a decent job, people will still go for them.
